Do Toddlers Need an iPad?
iPads!
It seems like everywhere you turn someone has an iPad, and it is a growing trend among parents to allow their toddlers to play with their iPads.
Some are even going as far as purchasing an iPad for their toddler. Seriously! I have seen it! Heck I have friends who have done it.
And I started to think about it seriously around Christmas time. I brought up the idea of buying an iPad for the family, which was quickly thrown out not only by our lack of funds, but the fact that my husband thought it was 110% ridiculous.
The more I thought about it, the more absolutely ridiculous it started to sound to me. Hell I am a grown ass woman, working on my 27th year on this planet and I can’t even get an iPad for myself… I can’t even afford one for WORK yet! Why would a two — almost THREE year old even QUALIFY to get one?
No way!
I can see families sharing them as educational tools because there are some really awesome app’s for kids, but to just give them their own? No way!
What do you think about the topic of toddlers with iPads?

plunderb commented on Jan 25 12 at 1:29 pmMy toddler has one. It was not purchased specifically for her — my partner is a web developer and bought one early on, only to be given a spiffy new one for work, so she inherited it. We’ve loaded it up with toddler games, e-books, Pixar shorts, and sing-along songs, and she loves it. We don’t use it much at home, but it was great over the holidays (lots of travel and a hospitalization). It’s an extravagance for sure, but when I think of all the money that the grandparents spent this year on toys that she played with for 5 minutes and then discarded, I can see the value of investing in something she will use as much as we’ll let her. If you have a child who has health problems and spends a lot of time in hospitals or if you can convince your family to pool resources and get an iPad instead of an avalanche of stuffed animals, I say go for it.

Sharon commented on Jan 25 12 at 3:02 pmI feel that as long as the time is limited and they are engaged in other activities, it is great. This can be a great device to teach children that there is a time that they need to sit down and concentrate on something that is educational and giving them the tools to function latter when they start school. I have a 4 month old son and I plan on having an age appropriate one for him. We do have some health issues with him and I will do what I can to entertain him when we go to the various appointments.
alejandra commented on Jan 25 12 at 3:45 pmMy hubby just ordered a PC tablet. For the family not just my Pre-schooler. I do see the benefits of all the educational Apps. So she will be using it too. But one just for her? No Way.
A. Parente commented on Jan 25 12 at 3:48 pm“Need” and Ipad? Not in a million years.. It is like a pacifier for the normal toddler/child/adolescent.
I can understand Plunderb having it for her purpose but in general? No.
Once we keep giving our children all their “wants” and keep calling them “needs” we are going to end up with a society full of children/adolescents/young adults who have some sort of sense of entitlement where nothing will ever be good enough for them. Always needing the next new and expensive gadget to pacify themselves.
Becka commented on Jan 25 12 at 4:02 pmI think you under estimate the magic of an ipad in a toddler’s hands. It is incredibly portable, incredibly easy to use, and can be entertaining, educational, and a great distraction when needed.
Ours was a gift and the is used by the whole family – not just our toddler. But we don’t have a TV or any other toddler friendly “tech gadgets” and the ipad has proven its value many times over. We have it loaded up with apps, including some great books, and it is a special treat for our toddler when we really need her to be occupied.
I’m not saying it isn’t crazy – just saying we love it :)

Krista commented on Jan 25 12 at 5:54 pmI must confess that my 2.5 year old has his own iPad. It was a gift from his grandparents and I myself don’t have one. He uses it once a day for his quota of screen time (when my infant goes down for a nap) and absolutely loves his talking books and games.
Lola commented on Jan 26 12 at 2:46 pmMy 14 month old and 11 year old stepdaughter received an ipad as a share gift for Christmas from their grandparents. This is the most amazing gift I have ever let my daughters play with. They have been proved to be so helpful for autistic children as well as toddlers. At 15 months, she is putting together puzzles, counting, and drawing stars and other shapes. She LOVES it and so do I. We even had to set time limits on it since it is such a hit!
Leah commented on Jan 27 12 at 1:08 pmI wouldn’t get one just for her, but did consider purchasing one for the family with the idea that my toddler could use it. I have a smart phone and have downloaded some apps that are useful in situations where we are waiting and I don’t want her running around… but she probably has used it for less than an hour total, and at 18 mos her attention span for it is usually less than 2 minutes. My mom got a Kindle Fire for her birthday and downloaded some talking/animated books and games and we used it on a recent cross country 6.5 hour flight to distract my toddler… but she really prefers tactile books etc.
I do think that tablet computers can be a tool in the educational basket, but I don’t like the idea of kids having a ton of time interacting with electronic equipment when there’s a big world to explore. A little bit of exposure is good, but as long as it’s balanced.
Jessica commented on Jan 27 12 at 2:49 pmWe received an iPad as a family gift at Christmas. My 3 year old and 7 year old both use it for counting, drawing, singing into and countless other educational games. We have found that it is a very kid friendly way to use technology and learn at the same time. We do feel however that it is important that our children have time limits and that the iPad does not take the place of parenting or family time!
Jaime commented on Jan 27 12 at 6:45 pmNo. I have let my toddler watch a movie on mine but it is NOT his! No toddler needs an iPad.
