goodnight 300x225 10 Ways My Toddler Avoids Going To Sleep

Goodnight already!!!

I remember before I had kids, we were at our friends’ house on a Saturday night. They had a 3-year-old girl. She was asking for thing after thing after thing, calling out “Mommy” then “Daddy” (when Mommy was over it).

I know I thought that somehow, this was the parents’ fault, and that I would never end up in this situation.

It’s funny the things you think before you are a parent, right?

It’s 9:22pm. My 3-year-old just fell asleep. We’d been trying to get him down since…I dunno…8pm?

We did everything short of lock him in his room (which we’re not above, by the way).

Tell me if you’ve heard any of these tried and true toddler excuses to get out of bed:

Okay, I'll go to bed. Right after these planes take-off.
"Fine."
"And then they have to land."
"Right. But that's it."

Oh yes, the I’m hungry one especially is very familiar. We finally put the kibosh on that last week, and had a hell of a few days (we used to give in to that one a lot because she’s a picky eater).

@mindy- we’re putting the kibosh on that too, but yeah when your kid eats three bites of dinner you feel a little bad putting them to bed hungry.

My parents still joke about when I was little and would always come downstairs with “I forgot to tell you something!” I think now they are glad that I have the same trouble getting my little one to bed at night. She always needs to have one more thing to get to bed – “I need my dolly, I need my book, I need baby’s blankie,” it goes on and on. Then she has to make sure the door is shut so the cat can’t come in and that all her things are in the right place, then she needs a hug and a kiss and then another hug and then says goodnight and then tells me how much she likes Cinderella and that it’s mean when they tear her dress and Cinderella gets sad and cries…. and then says goodnight again and wants another hug and kiss. Bedtime has become a process and I’m hoping it’s just a phase (please be a phase!)
