Naps Are for Wimps

DSC 0021 2 199x300 Naps Are for WimpsCheck it out, H-Bomb took over the computer again!  My momma is currently knee-deep in making something called an “advent calendar,” but she says that it involves candy, and I volunteered to pitch in on her writing gig.

I’m a good kid like that, as long as I’m not asked to eat green vegetables.

Or take a nap.

Yeah, I used to take naps BACK WHEN I WAS A BABY.  But I’m not a baby anymore, I’m a big kid. And if there are any questions about my big-kid status, check and respect the evidence:

Toddler bed?  CHECK.  Front-facing in the carseat?  CHECK.  Drinking from a cup with no straw?  MEGA-CHECK.

So when my momma looks at me after lunch and says, “It’s time, buddy,” heck yes I’m going to throw myself on the ground and cry.  Then sulk all the way up the stairs.  Don’t you worry about me rubbing my eyes, it’s NOT BECAUSE I’M SLEEPY.  It’s because I … uh … have allergies?  Yeah.  Because naps are for sissies, and I’ll give you several good reasons that this homeboy has too much to do to be taking an afternoon siesta.

Pretty sure Harry has been chit-chatting with my kid.

harry, your mom & dad totally eat ICE CREAM after you go to sleep! PEPPERMINT ice cream! don’t tell your mom i told you.

side note to your momma: why do we avoid naps like the plague when we’re little, yet crave them when we grow older? i’d kill for a daily nap!

My daughter gave up naps recently, too. (She turned 2 in August) I tried for awhile to force it, but she’d spend a half-hour yelling in her room before falling asleep for 30 min. Was hardly worth it. I now just have her lay on the couch with her blankie and have”quiet time”. I close the shades and put one of her shows on low volume and she chills there for an hour. She’s not in her room, I get a little time to have my lunch, throw in laindry, etc. – everyone’s happy :)

So not looking forward to the loss of the nap. Because, um, I FRIGIGN’ NAPS WITH HIM, HELLO?! I do not want to lose MY nap, so yes, I make it as normal as possible that we’re lying down in the middle of the day, soon after lunch, before Dora even goes off. He’s never protested (unless he genuinely wasn’t ready, in which case maybe 20-30 mins of quiet reading first) and I do not look forward to the day when he says no nap, mommy (like he does at bedtime sometimes, “Oh. I no sleepy, thank you.” It’s hilarious.

At the same time, though, I am completely ready to not have to be a slave to his weekend nap. We need to run errands either before noon or after 2:30. Please don’t call me during those hours. Because I’ll be napping.

Love this post, makes me feel not so alone. Henry, one day younger than Harry, also sucks in the nap department these days. He sulks and complains, sometimes takes a really long time to go to sleep, and then will give us 50 minutes or an hour, tops. Of course, he’ll still nap 2+ hours at daycare, but he’s NEVER done that for us.

I get REALLY jealous of parents whose kids take 3-hour naps. Never in his life has Henry napped that long. Just too much going on, as Harry said!!
