Working? More like FAILING!

As you all know, I am a work-at-home mom. The job in itself is awesome, the downside is taking care of three children full time while working. My oldest is leaving toddlerhood and entering full blown childhood in December, and my middle son is in full force toddler mode. The baby… well she is just there most of the time.

People always insist working at home must be so easy. I mean doesn’t everyone dream of working from home? Of course, but that dream also includes full time childcare for most, or no children at all right?

Lori, the wonderful MommyFriend who also is a writer here on Toddler Times sparked my interest the other day after making a video that was a couple minutes long about her struggle working at home with her two boys. I think boys just make working at home harder in general.

So, I thought I would show about one minute of my day-to-day work routine, or really what happens when I try to work with my kids around.

Do you work from home? And have toddlers?

I LOVE working from home!! I have my almost 4 year old and a friends 18 month old during the day. I wouldn’t change a thing! Structure is the best way for me to get my work done without going insane, we are on a pretty strict schedule here so I can be done with work by the time my older kid gets home.

I work from home 1 day a week and it’s brutal. I honestly try to get my work done the night before after they go to bed, and then again during naptime on Fridays. I spend my day at home keeping my toddler entertained and my infant happy. I long for the days when they play together for an hour or so at a time and I can get some emails answered and a report put together. But until then … I must do what I can during my peaceful times.

What’s worse is when my oldest was an infant I had lots of time to do laundry and clean the house too. Now that she’s a toddler that time is gone and I struggle to find the time to do that, yet I set a precedent that it would get done on my day at home. So I stress trying to get laundry and dishes and floors and bathrooms clean while working and keeping the toddler entertained and feeding the baby and …….

Same boat (SAHM mom/Writer/Editor) – and it’s an effing s&*t show. Every day it’s just about doing triage – what deadlines absolutely must be met – how many times a day does he really have to eat? And clean laundry generally sits in a huge pile in the living room instead of being folded and put away. And I only have one!
