A Late Fall Shout-Out To Skip Hop
Owl Pack
Ok, I know backpacks are such a back-to-school topic, and I realize it is early November, but I have to acknowledge the people at Skip Hop now, since we didn’t get our backpack until school was already underway.
Here is Shnook wearing his beloved owl backpack. He wants to wear it all the time, but at this point can only wear it to the car (fifteen feet) and then from the car into his preschool (another fifteen feet). Truthfully, as a preschooler, he does not need a backpack, but I’m glad we have it. He puts his extra clothes in it and his lunchbox fits in there too. Occasionally he’ll bring a book to school or an item from nature, and they all fit nicely into this pack. Plus it is so freaking adorable, I can’t stand it. It’ll be a few years before his backpack will smell from old lunch and undone homework sheets will be smooshed at the bottom.
As a teacher, the students in my class were not allowed to carry backpacks. Why, you ask? Why such a cruel school and a cruel teacher?
There was no room for them.
I worked at a small Charter School that was a converted facility and we didn’t have coat rooms or closets like most traditional schools. Plus, we live in Southern California. Most kids didn’t bring their lunches, and they only needed a light jacket or sweater, plus their homework folders. Backpacks were extraneous clutter. Even at Shnook’s school, he shares a cubby with another kid who seems to have tons of stuff every day. Shnook almost always has to hang his backpack in the cubby next to his.
But the real reason I love Skip Hop backpacks so much?
They don’t smell like toxic plastic. When I took the backpack out of the bag, I wasn’t assaulted with that horrible smell that seems to surround most kids backpacks and lunchboxes that I’ve encountered. Per the website: All Skip Hop backpacks are Phthalate and BPA-Free. Yippee!
