Appropriate?

Every parent has been there — holding down a screaming child while someone, hopefully a professional, tries to cut his or her hair — and it’s truly a bad experience for all involved. As a mother of three, I understand that when it comes to your little ones’ manes, sometimes you just get what you can (or you just shave it all off so you don’t have to deal with another haircut for many many months). But some parents purposely give their tots bad haircuts. (I just want to know how they got the kid to sit for that long!)

From mullets to mohawks, here are some of the worst toddler cuts … should these parents be locked up by the fashion police? Tell me what you think in the comments.

See more after the jump!

The Mini Mullet
Poor kid! Who would give their toddler a mullet (also known as: The Hockey Hair Cut, The Achy-Breaky Bad Mistakey, Business in the front... party in the back)? This isn't 1989!

My daughter naturally has a mullet. Almost 2 1/2, never had a haircut, and the only hair of any length is in the back. We do everything we can to accentuate the rest of her hair … but I just can’t get past her having a mullet.

My 15 month old has a mohawk right now, only because I can only get to the sides before he moves on me. I keep it short and it is not dyed. I like it because right away people know he is a boy. Where when he has all his hair and it starts to get long they ask how old my daughter is.

We are a punk rock family – and my kid ASKED me for a mohawk… so he got one. He is 5 now – and just last week decided he wants one again… so next hair cut, he can have one. I don’t see what the big deal is… its just hair… it will grow back.

I just cut my 2year olds hair in to a mohawk he loves it an so do I before that he has sported a faid since in was 15 months old but i do all the hair cuts on the boys myself

Worse than the hair, which will grow and be cut, are the little boys whose parents took it upon themselves to pierce either one or both of their ears. I mean, let a kid at least DECIDE if they’re going to grow up a d-bag.

I don’t think it’s appropiate to subject a child to the looks and stares of other adults and kids. If the child wants and needs that kind of attention then there is something missing at home. On the other hand if that is the style in your area and the child wants that type of style and your OK with it, then I don’t think there is a problem. But if your imposing your values because you think it looks cute you are really causing your child self esteem issues. He/she will carry that issue throughout their lives.

My 1 year old has the “pebbles look” it keeps the hair out of her face without me having to cut her bangs every few days. Her hair grows super fast, and she hates head bands. I get TONs of complements on her hair! Hers doesn’t just stick straight up like that kid though, it falls to the side a bit.

Jen commented on Oct 18 11 at 11:51 am

that’s weird… you changed the “pebbles” pic…ya, the pic with 3 pony tails looks pretty stupid! they should of just done pigtails with that much hair. my daughter lets me do them sometimes but it will be maybe another month before they will look real good with the length of her hair.

Jen commented on Oct 18 11 at 11:56 am

“Maybe it’s just my personal pet peeve,” or maybe you just have a lot of personal pet peeves when it comes to hair. What exactly do you consider “normal” and “okay?” Could you please explain that to the rest of us so that we all know we are following within your allowed styles? Seriously, get over yourself, no one put you in charge of determining what haircuts are okay for kids & there is no link between the haircuts they have as a child and how they will turn out (my brother had 3 or 4 of those & is a respected and successful soldier). Personally, I’m not a fan of the mullet, but for some kids, it’s the way their hair is growing in and you really can’t help it & I understand that. My nieces & nephew all had mohawks for a short period of time, my nephew would even turn his head to rub it against his crib or the floor to get it to stand up in the middle at just a few months old.

The pic that’s labeled “The Rat Tail” is a mullet, not a rat tail. I should know. I had one…actually, I’ve had both.

Don’t judge me.

i will NEVER let my kids have these hair cuts. it looks terrible

heather commented on Oct 18 11 at 2:07 pm

It appears as though a lot of the kids in these pictures would be old enough to have actually asked for the hairstyle… Oh well, as others have said it is just hair, and it grows back. Everyone, everywhere will eventually be embarrassed by their hair, might as well let these little ones get it out of the way early.

So that’s my kid with the “mini rat tail” and you can call off the fashion police. His natural hair grew in all business in the front, party in the back and we were MAKING FUN OF IT by fluffing it up like that while we were standing next to the haircut chair at his first haircut. He was barely a year old at the time. Sorry peeps, we weren’t trying to make a statement. That god-awful rat tail situation is the reason he got a haircut in the 1st place. (Now I can’t really speak for any of these other fools…)

Half of those kids look like they are past the toddler stage. Some of those kidsvhair may be that way naturally, not everyones hair grows in perfectly. There isis absolutely nothing wrong with Mohawks.

Why is this site so judgemental.

Im about at the point of unliking babble so im not bombarded with garbage anymore. This site use to be fun and helpful…what happened?

kim commented on Oct 19 11 at 1:40 pm

I like the mohawk! You can’t get away with it once you have a job, so if a little one wants one, what’s the harm?

I have a 1 year old and can’t figure out another way to style her hair besides the Pebbles (I hate bangs, she pulls hairbands and side clips out). Any suggestions?

Alison commented on Oct 19 11 at 3:58 pm

My 8 year old has a green mohawk at the moment, and it was red before that. He asked for the cut and the color. We used the semi-permanent wash-out type. Who cares. It looks cute and he’s a straight student who rarely gets in trouble in trouble in school .Once he hits 6th grade the school’s dress code only allows “natural” hair colors, so why not let him play with his hair now.

Any advice for a woman whose son’s hair automatically falls into the bowl cut or the businessman even when taken to professional salons? I swear. I’m trying to figure out a way to do his fair that isn’t mop, but isn’t bowl cut or businessman.

Kitten commented on Oct 22 11 at 2:41 am

Hair is hair, it can be cut and will grow back. And no life is lost. My kids have great manners, polite, caring… if they want to have a hair cut that is out of fashion but makes them smile. I let them. In my opinion people are too concerned about their kids being stylish or cool instead of letting them show their individuality and be kids. My daughter is clean, healthy, athletic, kind, smart… and has her bangs dyed teal. She also wants a mohawk this summer. My son is 5. So funny and sweet. Cared for, clean and healthy. He for the first time asked to have his hair cut a certain way, a mohawk. So he got it. I don’t want my kids to choose their styles by what a magazine states it the only cool way to dress or style to carry. I want them to be them.

So… is there any hairstyle for kids that they CAN wear?
