How to Shave Your Head Like a Girl (A Video)
I shaved my head this weekend. It’s a rite of passage for anyone losing their hair to chemotherapy. I wanted to share it because it wasn’t a sad experience. It was fun. I didn’t shave it myself. I had help from my friends and family. My 4-year-old daughter did a great job. It feels like I washed my head in mint or wintergreen! We made a mini movie out of it…..I wanted to share the video. Oh yeah, my mother shaved her head too.

I don’t want to say I’ve “enjoyed” watching your cancer journey – that’s not the right word – I’m just glad that you have shared it with all of us. So that at least we can pray for you and have some knowledge of what you are going through, since we can’t be there. I think about you all the time.
On a related note, I shaved my head at 22 years old. It was not for the same reasons – it was so I could see what I looked like with short hair (and I wanted to start from scratch to see it in all the stages). I had hair as long as you. I had a boyfriend at the time, and his brother shaved it off one day at our rental house. It was a split second decision, and shortly thereafter I thought, “What have I done?!” as I looked at the pile of hair on the floor. But it’s the best thing I could have done. It was a defining in my life. It was interesting to be judged when I went out. People stared, and I could only imagine what they thought . . . and I lived in Seattle at the time, where weirdness is the norm! Essentially shaving my head made me less vain and less self-conscious.
I hope that, despite the circumstances, it’s a good thing for you too. It’s amazing how something like shaving your head can change your life. I know that you know that more than anyone :D
Love you my friend!

Melanie @ Lucky 7 Design commented on Jan 18 12 at 12:51 amI follow Ashley’s blog and her FB page, she is an inspiration to me and a ton of other women. My father died 4 weeks ago today from Cancer and Im amazed at the courage and bravery that Ashley shows on a daily basis.
This video shows her take on Cancer, it will not break her spirit. She has such a huge support group and as you see in this a wonderful, caring family.
I can’t wait for my Choose Joy bracelet to arrive, I will wear it with pride everyday!

Shelly Bryan commented on Jan 19 12 at 7:42 pmYou are such a beautiful woman with hair or with out.. My friend went through the same thing, cutting her hair. Even let her daughter do some of the cutting. You look like you have alot of support, and that is key. We (your friends, family and others) don’t know exactly what your going through, I do believe faith, family, laughter does help. Thank you for showing this, brought back some wonderful memories..Stay strong. We are praying for you..
