02 18 Creative Family Picture Poses

If you’re like us — and a lot of families this time of year — you’re planning for your annual family picture so you can get it done in time for your holiday cards.

But unless you’re one of the rare sort who can come up with a creative family picture idea every year (like my husband’s cousin Cathy and her husband Phil), you may need a little inspiration. How can you find a pose that doesn’t look like the same one you’ve done every year?

I’ve found some ideas for you (and me) in this great gallery full of ideas. Check out the pics and check out the photographers’ sites, too — and maybe you’ll be lucky and one of them will be in your town. As for us, we’ve got our pictures scheduled with our extended family next Saturday … wish us luck.

In the meantime, take a look at these creative poses … after the break.

My babies are all gorwn now(3 daughters) but 2 of them have given me 2 beautiful grandsons, both turning two right about now. These family photos are amazing, and extremely creative and fun! My favorite is “Under the Covers”, but several others really touched my heart!
LOVE your website!

Using the accents of turquoise in the main photo looks fabulous!

Love them ALL! How cute is the ‘Feet Pose’ with the baby’s feet at the top? Adorable. Cannot wait to show my daughter who loves to take photos, maybe I will get a new family picture out of it. Thanks for sharing the various photography poses.

I liked the framing the kids one where you can see the parent’s faces. The other one I liked was the Pop holding the small tot upside down by the ankle with great big grins and mom focused on another child (though one child’s face was looking down; defeats the point of a family portrait, a retake would fix that.) These both capture the realness of family- not all doing the same thing at the same moment. Other than that- I’m sick of the “family bed” pictures. Literally, the idea is- “Look where we make kids!” Uh, yeah…we get it; stupid. The whole family “group hug”…even less natural than everyone smiling perfectly.

I didn’t like the feet picture. I’m okay with kids’ feet, which don’t really smell. But I associate grown up feet with foot odor and dirty toenails. Please don’t send that to me as a Christmas card! Yuck!

Some of these are really cute but some poses are pretty unsafe. As a photographer, I would never ask a parent to dangle their child upside down by the ankle or throw their child in the air just for a photo op. If they want to do it on their own time, that’s up to them, but I would feel absolutely horrible if a child (or anyone) got hurt during a shoot.

I’m also over the whole bed thing, unless it’s with a baby and/or young children. Once a kid hits maybe 8 or so, it seems a tad inappropriate. JMO

Um, in the photo with the kids in the frame, why is the child on the left leg-less?

LM commented on Feb 16 12 at 2:51 pm

I think the legless child is on his knees? Great reference point we are always looking for good ideas for family portraits
