Deciding on Vacuum Cleaners

Posted by Jenny Komenda on August 17th, 2011 at 11:47 pm

We live in a loft where all the floors are white epoxied concrete. Our lease says that we should have about 80% of the floor covered in rugs though. I think we’re probably pushing around 60-70%, so there’s still a lot of floor that is hard surface.

1 l dyson animal dc07 l Deciding on Vacuum Cleaners

We bought a Dyson vacuum about six years ago as a floor sample at Sharper Image (I think it was when the stores were liquidating). Anyway…

We’ve been happy with the Dyson Animal, but the poor thing is on it’s last leg. It was not in perfect condition when we bought it so long ago and we have worked our purple beast into the ground with kid spills and project clean ups.

If I’m being picky though, I would have to say I’m not all that thrilled with the Dyson’s performance on hard floors. It’s AMAZING on carpet though.

So now that we’re in the market for a new vacuum, I’m considering the Miele Deciding on Vacuum Cleaners. It’s pricey (comparable to the Dyson) but it’s not bagless, which honestly, I can’t tell if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I hate changing the dang bags, but I also don’t love the dust storm that happens when I empty out the Dyson canister. I’ve heard that Miele is the best model for homes with a mix of carpeting and hard surfaces.

I would LOVE your input here if you have any. What brands should I be considering? I want something high quality, that will last 5-10 years, and that performs great on both rugs and hard surface flooring. I’ll be sure to report back after making our purchase.

I bought a Sebo vacuum cleaner, the upright pet max version and it is the best thing ever!! They’re used by hoteliers and are absolutely great. It goes so flat that it vacuums under the bed and sofas without me having to use the hose. What can I say – I’m easily pleased!! The suction on it is great – you can’t let go of it or it will walk off on it’s own!! I have both hard floors and long pile rugs. The vacuum adjusts to the height and then it lets you know when it’s at the correct height with a little light that illuminates. I cannot fault it in anyway.

In my opinion, canister vacuums are a pain in the neck.

I grew up in a house with a canister and vacuuming was my assigned chore. I grew to dislike lugging the long tube around, getting stuck behind furniture, banging into corners with the caboose, cramming it all into a closet, etc.

A few years ago my SIL wanted this same Miele. They, too, have a mix of flooring: hardwood, carpet, tile, rugs. I suggested she first try vacumming the house with their shop vac – not it’s intent, but it would show her how unweildy a canister can be. She lasted 2 rooms and 1 stairway attempt before giving up on the canister idea and bought another upright.

So, in summary, while the Miele might be a good product, it’s been my personal experience that canister vacs have become nearly extinct for a reason: they are not as easy to maneuver or store as uprights.

Good luck with your search!

We have had the Miele for almost 7 years and love it. Changing the bags is a super clean process. It is light and easy to manage. I highly recommend it.

Rene commented on Aug 18 11 at 6:32 am

I’ve had a Miele for about five years and really like it — the bags are easy to change out, the different heads make cleaning carpet and solid flooring really easy, and it’s light enough for my seven year old to drag around the house when she’s in the mood to help out. Plus, on a completely unnecessary note, it’s attractive. :)

Jennifer commented on Aug 18 11 at 7:05 am

I’ve got a Miele (it was a floor model, so it was about the same price as a Dyson), and I love it. When I was researching vacuums, I was impressed by comments on customer service, ease of repair, and longevity, in contrast to Dyson. It’s worth extra, if I don’t have to replace it every few years.

Jenny Baer commented on Aug 18 11 at 7:09 am

We have that exact Miele you show in the post. We love it! Highly recommend!

Eliza commented on Aug 18 11 at 7:40 am

When I was registering for my wedding everyone kept saying dont forget to register for a Dyson. Well I did and I could not be happier- although I agree with you on the wood floor thing, I wish it was a tad better in that area. But, once this one kicks the bucket I’m going to have to follow in my parents footsteps and get a Kirby. They are expensive (to say the least) but that thing is the best workhorse ever. It even has a carpet washer feature which once I have kids I KNOW I will need to use all the time. So, long story short my vote is Kirby.

LindsB commented on Aug 18 11 at 8:39 am

I’ve had an Electrolux Harmony for the past 8 years and been very pleased with it. I prefer the dirt to be contained inside a bag, and changing them is literally one snap.

Christie Chase commented on Aug 18 11 at 8:48 am

After my dependable Kenmore kicked the bucket, (and some research on CR) we got a Miele. Ours is an upright. Great machine! Has handled two furry dogs with no problems. Very quiet compared to our old vacuum. I say go for the Miele.

Nichole@40daysof commented on Aug 18 11 at 8:55 am

Whenever I buy an appliance, I always check Consumer Reports for a performance review. My vacuum is over 15 years old but it’s still working. It’s a Hoover upright & I’ve had no problems with it.

Mary commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:05 am

My brother and his wife have a Miele and absolutely love it. They’ve actually convinced me to get one instead of a Dyson! I was wary of the canister thing, but it’s really light so I don’t think that will be a problem at all, and avoiding the dust storm I think will be great. Plus it’s super quiet. And pretty! :)

Amy commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:15 am

I too live in Manhattan with 2 kids and have a mix of carpet and wood floors. I just got a new vac a few months ago and looked at Miele, but ended up with a kenmore canister (from sears-progressive model). It was only 3 or 4 hundred and I have been so happy with it. I am super picky and vacuum all of the time. No buyer’s remorse at all.

Suzi commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:30 am

I am using my parents old Electrolux. I used this thing like 20 years ago when I would clean their house and I promise that it works exactly the same now. I’m not sure if the newer models are just as good, but I’ve been so impressed. I’ve owned countless Eurekas etc and a Dyson, but this is the best one ever!

amanda commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:35 am

Oh, and the electrolux isn’t bagless, and I love it. So much easier to take out that nasty bag and throw it away than to dump out that nasty container and get the yucky dirt flying back around everywhere.

amanda commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:36 am

After some research a year ago, I went with an Oreck for several reasons: I like the manuverability (is that a word?), it’s ability to handle carpet and hardwood floors well, and it’s made in the USA.

Jennifer commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:40 am

We bought a Sebo canister vac a couple of years ago and love it (and my Mom loves hers, too). The dealer sells both Sebo and Miele, but recommended the Sebo. My husband adores this vacuum cleaner and actually gives it affectionate looks, he loves it that much.

rh commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:41 am

Miele, hands down! You will never look back. I tell everyone it’s the best investment you’ll make! I use mine just about everyday and can’t imagine life without it, seriously. We have the light blue Polaris with a new soft brush attachment for about 3 yrs now. the bags come out without any mess or fuss. it’s quiet, light and fun to use. Not to mention, adorable :) Any questions, let me know!!

Desiree commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:46 am

I use my Dyson on wood floors all the time BUT with the attachment that i bought for I think $50 extra. Makes stairs much easier too … it virtually turns it in to a canister vac and can be used on small area rugs too.

All I know is, when I used to change bags – it seemed very infrequently – I still spilled dust. With a DYSON I ask myself how I didn’t have to change the bags every time I used my former vacuum, as the Dyson canister fills so quickly (with a dog whose only apparent job in life besides eating, is shedding long hair).

denisef in c'ville va commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:55 am

We LOVE our Miele Callisto! It truly works great for everything! The price tag was a little steep ($900), but totally worth it when you have a mix of tile/wood and carpet/rugs. If I remember correctly from our research before purchasing one, the Callisto is a Consumer Reports Best Buy.

Natalie Cox commented on Aug 18 11 at 10:10 am

The Dyson canister has a great attachment for hardwood floors. I am a HUGE Dyson fan and will never be swayed! My mom has a Miele and I wasn’t impressed with it.

Rachel commented on Aug 18 11 at 10:11 am

The Miele is fantastic for NYC apartments. I have the Manhattan model, which is exclusive to Gracious Home (similar to one of the other mid-priced ones; it was just renamed and issued in black for GH). Canisters are the best- easy to store and lightweight- and the two heads (one for hard floors, one for carpet that has a rotating brush) are exactly what you need. It’s my favorite home appliance, hands down. I am grateful for it every single day.

Elizabeth commented on Aug 18 11 at 10:53 am

I did some research a few months ago when I was in need of a new vacuum. I strongly believe that bagged ones are the way to go. I truly don’t understand the hype of bagless, to me, they make no sense. Your vacuum is supposed to clean the floors and then when you go to empty, the bagless creates all kinds of dust you just vacuumed, and then, you have to clean the canister. That dust is also bad if anyone in the family suffers from allergies, plus, it’s really not that hard to change a bag. Also, in my opinion, you don’t have to spend as much as a Dyson or Miele cost to end up with a superior model. I decided to buy an Oreck a few months ago and I am so happy with it. I have hardwood floors and area rugs, so I went with a model that has two speeds. The lower speed is great on the hardwoods because it doesn’t blow everything around. I purchased it when it was on sale and included 3 tuneups and I got the sales guy to throw in 8 bags, which should last awhile. I highly recommend Oreck — and it’s made in the U.S., can’t beat that!

Shannon commented on Aug 18 11 at 11:05 am

I also have an Oreck and am very happy with it. I’ve had it 6 years, and it still works great – like new – on both wood and carpet/rugs.

carak commented on Aug 18 11 at 11:39 am

I LOVE my dyson and would never buy another brand (definitely better than Oreck). I bought a refurbished one 3 years ago at about half the cost and have had no problem with it. I use it on carpet, tile, and hardwood and I think it works great on all of them (have you tried turning off the brush roll on non-carpet?). I just put the canister in a plastic bag when I empty it and then tie it off, I don’t get much dust. I also like not having the added expense and inconvenience of buying bags…and you can see when it’s full more easily.

Lo commented on Aug 18 11 at 11:40 am

We have that exact Miele vacuum. It was recommended to us by a friend that used to clean houses. We used it when our Dyson died as well. In general I would say the Miele is much better on our hard wood floors and furniture. It is also easier to maneuver around the apartment. On carpets though I am not horribly impressed. The Dyson cleaned rugs amazingly and at that time we had pets so that was necessary. The Miele does a decent job but if you have pets I probably wouldn’t recommend it. In general I like the Miele better– it is smaller and easier and I like the bag much better.

Anne commented on Aug 18 11 at 11:43 am

I love canister vacuums. I just have the Kenmore from Sears and it has lasted me through three apartments and four roommates. In contrast to the commenter above, I find them to be much easier to maneuver on hard surfaces and stairs than an upright. They also make vacuuming high things (like window blinds) much easier. Their Achilles heal is the joint where the hose enters the canister, eventually the hose will crack with age and the part will have to be replaced.

Sarah commented on Aug 18 11 at 11:52 am

I vote for Miele, and I have been using one for almost 10 years and love how well it works. I have terrible asthma and allergies and the sealed system is a must in controlling pollen and dust. I also like how it works well on carpets, hardwood floors, and also pricy oriental rugs without damaging the pile.

Good luck in your search for a new vacuum.

Liz commented on Aug 18 11 at 12:12 pm

I have an Oreck as well — based on a friend’s recommendation. I love it. It’s super light and does great on both hardwood and rugs.

Kim commented on Aug 18 11 at 12:28 pm

I have the same Miele…only not in the fun color:( when I purchased mine about 6 years ago that was not an option. Anyway, I LOVE it! We have hard wood and travertine in our home (az). It does a great job on the hard floors as well as all of my rugs. I remember thinking it was expensive when I purchased it, but after a few uses I was completely over the cost….so worth every penny!

stephanie commented on Aug 18 11 at 12:30 pm

Miele Callisto. I researched exhaustively–we have four kids and live in a brand new two story home we built ourselves with oak hardwood, slate and travertine tile and probably 40% rugs in the country in Northern California. The Callisto is light, quiet and ruthless on dust and cobwebs, it is light enough to use on the wood staircase and the rug attachment is perfect for the few large Persian rugs we have. I had two Kenmore canisters (which I loved) in the twenty years before I finally bit the $900 bullet and bought this one for the new house. I too think bagless is gross and messy and the compartment is just one more thing to clean.

Annebel commented on Aug 18 11 at 12:36 pm

We have an Oreck vacuum that I absolutely love! We’ve been living with my in-laws for the last couple of months who own a Kirby and I honestly can’t stand the thing. I miss my Oreck like crazy and can’t wait to be settled into my own home again with a great vacuum. We actually bought a refurbished commercial version from the store at a steep discount (for about $150) and haven’t had a single problem with it over the last four years. I can’t say enough good things about how well it works, on hard wood, shag rugs and regular carpet. It’s light, easy to maneuver and store.

Lonica commented on Aug 18 11 at 12:52 pm

I formerly worked in a bed and breakfast as a housekeeper, and at the age of 19 purchased my own first vacuum (and most expensive belonging at the time) the Sears/Kenmore canister vac. It comes in a few different levels of fancy, but I got the most expensive and I love it. The two we had at the B&B lasted well over 5 years, and mine is about 7 or 8 now. Similar concept to the Miele, more attachments…so I can meander around the house doing carpets, floor, dusting, cobwebs, stairs, couch, without stopping and going to the closet for the pieces.

Shauna commented on Aug 18 11 at 1:22 pm

PS: Find a vacuum repair-person. It’s like a doctor for vacuums…prevention is key.

Shauna commented on Aug 18 11 at 1:23 pm

Miele all the way! I first noticed these vacuums in all the swanky apartments in doing photo shoots on location in the city. I admit I was initially sucked in (ha) by their looks, but after owning one for the last three years I can say they are great! I seem to remember the salesman telling me all the models have the same motor, and that the various models are just a matter of different brushes and attachments.

Linsey commented on Aug 18 11 at 1:32 pm

I have a Rainbow Vacuum cleaner that I cannot live without. Not a lot of people know about this brand, but I would not change it for anything…
It is an investment which will last you for generations. No bags, no dust, cleans SO well!
Here is the link to their website, we bought it through a representative after an in-home presentation.

I have had my meile for at least 10 years, it has never needed a repair besides cord replacement (and that was the fault of the housekeeper who tried to pull it into another room) and it is still rocking along. It is an investment, but one I’m glad I bit the bullet and made. Our shop offers free annual maintenance, where they replace the bands and give everything a good cleaning. Hope this helps!

LOVE our miele. We have a white labrador and dark hardwood floors, I use it constantly. Great for rugs too.

Lacey Traeger commented on Aug 18 11 at 2:42 pm

The Oreck is great as well as a vintage model Electrolux Diplomat. The Diplomat is all metal and has the strongest sucking power I have ever encountered. They also last FOREVER. Personally I have the yellow Dyson, it’s okay- not as good as a vintage Diplomat though.Good luck.

Grace commented on Aug 18 11 at 3:11 pm

My mother has had the old-school Electrolux Lux Classic canister for 25 years, and it’s still going strong! I just purchased the same one for myself (the 2010 model), and I’m very pleased. Check it out at http://www.aerusvacuums.com/luxclassiccanister/

Sara commented on Aug 18 11 at 3:20 pm

Miele. I’m a housekeeper and use many kinds of vacuums. I liked using a Miele so much I bought one myself 10 years ago. Works just as good today as it did when I got it.

David commented on Aug 18 11 at 4:18 pm

Love, love, love, love my Miele. After buying consumer report’s top rated vacuum cleaners the last 3 or 4 purchases and having them die after a couple of years, I went hunting for something that was built to last longer. I called several independent vacuum repair shops in town, and asked them what brands they saw in the shop frequently for repairs, and what they would recommend. Hands down, (and these folks had nothing to gain), multiple shops recommended Miele as the best built, best performing, longest lasting vacuum. So, I have a beautiful Miele Jazz, which does both our hardwoods and rugs with ease. I’ve had it now for 4 years, and have seriously loved it. My vote is for the Miele.

Beth commented on Aug 18 11 at 5:38 pm

Get the Miele! I did a lot of research about 6 months ago and finally decided on the Miele upright. I love it! I actually get excited to vacuum. I hated my canister vacuum and I have found that the bags are much easier to contain the dust which is plus with my allergies. I love how it transfers from carpet to hard flooring, I love the suction control (great for rugs), I love how it looks and moves. The mieles are designed to last 20 years. You won’t regret your investment.

Heidi commented on Aug 18 11 at 5:44 pm

I also have the Rainbow System…It is the greatest thing we have ever bought! They also come to your house and give you a tutorial/ trial…My trial was done on my living room carpet and it picked up glitter from my Christmas presents. My trial was done in August, and I would have to say I had vacuumed my carpet a hundred times since Christmas :) the rainbow cleans every type of floor. they are kind of pricey, but come with a lifetime warranty.

Leisha commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:47 pm

I work at a museum (which happens to also be a historic home from the 18th century) and we have our cleaning staff use a Miele :)
My mom and aunts also all have the Miele and LOVE it. We use ours on hardwood and rugs and I find it to be equally amazing on both!

L commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:48 pm

I’ve had a Roomba for a few years and couldn’t live without it…not to mention it vaccuums by itself!

Chrystal commented on Aug 18 11 at 10:15 pm

We have hardwood floors all throughout our house, with area rugs. After months of agonizing, I finally purchased a Miele Polaris. I have not regretted it for a second. I love love love it for the hardwood, and it doesn’t do a bad job on the rugs either. BUT I still kept my upright vacuum to use on the rugs – it does seem to clean deeper. I didn’t want to pay hundreds more for a Miele model with a powered brush attachment. But if space were at a premium that’s what I would recommend getting.

PS – I live in Mesa. Woot!

Kyla commented on Aug 19 11 at 1:00 am

I also have that exact Miele model in your photo and it is worth EVERY penny. We have a Bernese Mountain Dog with the thickest coat that sheds everywhere!! Even without using the pet hair attachment, (i rarely bother) this vacuum is just plain fabulous. Works great on our wood floor as well as our carpeted rooms. Can’t rate it highly enough.

Melanie commented on Aug 19 11 at 5:48 am

We bought a Miele about 6 months ago, and it was the best decision ever. We have a mix of hardwoods and rugs, and like you, we live on one floor. It’s so quiet that I can vacuum part of the house while my toddler is sleeping. It really is one of the best purchases we’ve made in years.

Susanne commented on Aug 19 11 at 9:59 am

Miele is 1000% worth it. Amazing amazing amazing and is a work horse. My mother still has years some 15 years later.

Abbey commented on Aug 19 11 at 3:53 pm

I researched this like crazy a couple years back and wound up with a Simplicity canister, which proved itself after the small local vacuum store let me bring home a Miele and try it out (and a couple other brands and upright styles too – I was a vacuuming maniac for a few days there). The Simplicity was much easier to manuver, lighter weight and had better features for my home which is almost all hardwood, some tile and area rugs. If you can try one out before shelling out the big bucks, it will help you decide what actually works best for you. Love my Simplicity!

Kathryn commented on Aug 19 11 at 4:44 pm

I love my Miele on my hardwoods and rugs! I’ve had it about 9 months and have only had to change the bag once or twice.

Charlotte | Living Well on the Cheap commented on Aug 19 11 at 10:31 pm

ORECK. Best purchase I’ve ever made! Moderately priced, exceptionally light, has a bag, and automatically switches from hard floors to carpet! I love the Oreck for it’s simplicity and ease. An Oreck can last
20 years plus. It vacuums fantastic. Simple greatness.

Cadi commented on Aug 20 11 at 9:18 am

Miele is the one! I researched Consumer’s Guide and Consumer’s Report. The canister moves along quite nicely.Just think of it as your friendly cleaning robot dog.

JM commented on Aug 20 11 at 9:57 am

I have 2 Mieles. The first I bought when we only had hard floors, almost 10 years ago. It still works great. The next I got a few years later when we moved to a home with wall to wall carpeting in bedrooms and basement and needed a more carpet-friendly model. It also works great. The bags are not dirty to change. They are well-designed and catch ALL of the dust. I like having 2 now because one child can vacuum the hard floors while the other vacuums the carpets.

Becki commented on Aug 22 11 at 1:08 am

Add one more vote to the Miele chorus. We bought ours about 10 years ago and it’s still fantastic. We have 3 cats and 3 kids, and the Miele keeps up with all their messes–it has never needed repair or service. I was a little shocked at the price all those years ago, but it has absolutely been worth it.

Nicole commented on Aug 22 11 at 2:48 pm

Simplicity brand vacuums are the best, hands down. Miele used to be great — years ago. And it’s “trendy” now, and European, so they’re popular here in America recently. But the truth is that Miele was bought out by another huge vacuum brand in the last decade (I forget which one) and slowly all of their metal parts have been replaced with cheaper plastic parts (among other changes). Simplicity (while not as exotic) is one of the old, venerable vacuum brands, and their parts are still metal and the quality is still indisputable. The only problem is that they’re pretty expensive!

I’m sure you’d be happy with either brand, though. Bagged canisters are the way to go!

Brittany commented on Aug 22 11 at 8:21 pm

I will echo all the positive comments already made about the Miele – I bought it 7 or 8 years ago, when my husband and I were broke students. I research the death out of anything likely to cost over $100, and the vacuum cleaner decision was no exception. The Miele was expensive to us, but I didn’t want to spend less on something and have to replace it and go through the whole drawn out process all over again in a few years. I totally disagree that canister vacuums are a pain – the Miele is well designed and rolls around with you with no issues. It makes vacuuming stairs a breeze, the carpet attachment works well on area rugs, and the regular attachment is fantastic on non-carpeted surfaces. And changing the bag is a non issue – in my opinion way less dirty than emptying a canister. I’m not exaggerating when I say that just about every time I or my husband use it, we look at the other and say “this was one of the best purchases we’ve ever made” or “God, I love this vacuum.” After so many crummy ones over the years, we mean it!

Amanda commented on Aug 26 11 at 10:18 pm

Another enthusiastic vote for Miele. I have a mix of hardwoods, tile, area rugs, and carpet. I also have stairs, an incredible shedding dog, kids that track in everything, and people with allergies. I have a pricier one with a hardwood brush, electric powered brush, on board tool storage, electronic foot controls, and sealed system HEPA. It handles the dog hair easily (bonus is that the powered brush has no belt, so it’s really easy to clean if needed). The sealed system keeps particles from going back in the air and bag changes are easy. The bag even has a flap that closes when the vacuum is off. I use it daily and go through about a bag per month, so it gets a lot of use. It replaced a canister and an upright and does a better job than both of them put together. It’s light, small, maneuvers easily, quiet, and should last a long time. It was a lot more than I thought I’d ever spend on a vacuum, but I’m so happy I bought it.
