Yesterday, Bethany Sanders wrote about Nell Casey’s article wherein she explained that she earns more than her husband and admitted to using it, on occasion, to get out of parenting duties. Many families today need both parents to work, just to make ends meet, and yet, many women still find themselves doing the lion’s share of the work at home. But the home is not the same as it once was and marriage is not the same. These days, it falls upon both parents to both bring home the bacon and to fry it up in a pan — at least it should.
I don’t know how other parents do it. It seems like I barely have time to get the kids off to school before I need to be at work and then, even not taking time off for lunch, it’s nearly bedtime by the time I’ve put in my eight hours and made my way home. We never have enough time for playing games or working on projects together. But what’s a parent to do, short of discovering a previously-unknown rich uncle? We’ve got bills to pay; kids aren’t cheap!
Like nearly every one of us did way back when, 17-year-old Zikerria Bellamy applied for a job at McDonald’s. Lots of teens appreciate the free food, the experience, and, most of all, the money that comes with the job. Unfortunately, Zikerria wasn’t hired. That wouldn’t be of much interest were it not for the reason she was turned down — Zikerria is transgendered. And if that weren’t bad enough, one of the managers of the restaurant actually called her and left a voice message saying “We don’t hire faggots.”
According to a survey taken by the Pew Research Center, almost two-thirds of working mothers would rather work part-time than full-time. Fathers, on the other hand, overwhelmingly — almost four out of five — prefer to work full time. Even putting the Monday morning “I-don’-wanna-go-work” feeling aside, these statistics surprise me in that I would expect far more parents would want to cut back on their work schedule in favor of spending time with their kids.
