“Where the Wild Things Are” is probably one of the most hyped films of the year. I had reservations going in, but I was pleasantly surprised.
By almost any measure, this is a very well made movie. The visuals are terrific, the creatures look about as real as they can, and the kid who plays Max (real name Max Records, believe it or not) does a great job.

When I first read that Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are was headed for the big screen, I cringed. I still haven’t recovered from what Simon Birch did to A Prayer for Owen Meany. But then I saw the trailers and, well, you know the rest. It looks breathtaking, and Maurice Sendak has put his stamp of approval on the project.

Spike Jonze's Where The Wild Things Are hits theatres October 16, 2009
Like many people — dare I say most people? — one of my favorite books as a child was Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are. And, like most people, I would hate to see it cheapened by Hollywood trying to make it into some sort of blockbuster action-comedy-love story. Such a powerful, extraordinary book would need an exceptional filmmaker who would put Sendak’s stunning imagery and timeless story ahead of box office returns. Continue reading »

One of my ex-boyfriends had a Max from Where the Wild Things Are tattoo. At twenty I thought it was pretty much the coolest things ever. Back then it seemed totally original, but it turns out that that tributes to Maurice Sendak’s children’s masterpiece are almost as popular butterflies or cute little stars…almost.
