“Till death do us part” may soon be revised to “Till this contract expires” for couples getting married in Mexico’s capital.
Mexico City’s progressive legislature is looking to bring down the local divorce rate with a radical proposition: setting a time limit on marriages. Instead of making a life commitment to one another, you can sign on for as little as two years, or as long a time as you like. You’ll have the option to renew your vows, of course.
Half of all marriages end in divorce, and most are over within two years. Shortening the term of a marriage contract gives unhappy spouses a way out while (hopefully) making less paperwork for the courts. But is this really a good idea?
Should she have said yes to the dress?
After the kids were in bed last night, I flopped down on the couch and started flipping through TV channels. Completely exhausted after a long week, I was looking for a little brain candy. I landed on Say Yes to the Dress – a guilty pleasure for me. I don’t know what it is about the show – the perfect white gowns, the push and pull of all the personalities in the bride’s entourage, or the show’s salespeople moving in for the kill – but I can’t help but watch.
Last night, I randomly caught an episode with Syndal Gordon, fiancé of former Yankee pitcher Chad Gaudin, who brought an entourage of Yankee wives with her to pick out her wedding dress. They popped open a bottle of bubbly in the bathroom of Kleinfeld’s (no champagne near the dresses!) and got to work finding the perfect dress for Syndal.
Syndal struck me as a really sweet girl. And she seemed pretty sure of what she wanted. She said that her wedding was going to have a “bling” theme, and she didn’t care if people thought it was tacky, because she thought it was fun. More power to you, Syndal, I thought to myself. But, as the episode wore on, I kept thinking: “Syndal! No!” as the obviously well-meaning Yankee wives talked her into buying a dress that she didn’t seem entirely sure she wanted. Maybe it was just me, but she seemed hesitant, and in the end she said that the ladies in her entourage must know what they’re talking about, so she went along with their decision. I don’t know, maybe she really did love the dress?

Upon holding up her newborn child for cameras, 11-year-old Kordeza Zhelyazkova said, “I’m not going to play with toys any more – I have a new toy now.”
Yikes.
Kordeza went into labor during the wedding ceremony to her teenage boyfriend Jeliazko Dimitrov. She still was still wearing the white dress and tiara when she gave birth to her daughter, Violeta.
She didn’t want to be pregnant in her wedding gown. Which is why it took Rachael Savory and Jay Wong fourteen years until they could tie the knot.
