In addition to feeling really emotional, I’ve also felt pretty icky watching videos of soldiers returning home to the considerable surprise of their children. It’s kind of a private moment, and yet there I am, along with 3 million of my closest friends, clicking on the link while I drink my morning coffee.

You know how they go: Dad, who has been away in Afghanistan or Iraq, returns home earlier than the child expected. Rather than wait until the child is home, the dad — and someone holding a camera — show up at school/the corner bakery/a football game/as Santa.

Child sits stunned for a moment, then runs to dad. Kid cries. Dad cries. Camera-holder cries. We all cry. Video gets uploaded. CNN runs it round the clock. More tears.

It’s almost fun, like a movie. But, ew. That’s a real kid … whose real dad was away at war. Then Dad suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Doesn’t that mess with their minds even a little bit? Continue reading »

Guitar teacher Rob Hampton has convinced me that every city needs to have open mike nights for the ten-and-under crowd. It’s a perfect idea–adults grab a drink, sit back and revel simultaneously in cuteness and awesome music, while kids get the exhilarating experience of performing for an audience and getting rewarded for hard work.

After I stumbled upon a completely addictive video of five-year-old Wesley performing Johnny Cash like an old pro, I discovered lots of other awesome performances from that same Coffee Shop Jam in Seattle, Washington.

Emma gets professional backup on her original “Snowday,” sure to be come a schoolyard classic. And nine-year-old Connor gets the crowd cheering with his original heavy metal. Honestly, these kids are amazing. It’s great to see young talent being celebrated and nurtured.

I spend way too much time on YouTube. It’s totally addictive. I’ll go to the site to look for one 2-minute clip and the next thing I know, I’ve dwindled away hours upon hours of searching for amusing, obscure and entertaining tidbits. Yeah, a total time suck.

One of my most recent searches? Old school kid TV clips. What set it off? Being sent a link to above Mahnahmahnah video (from The Muppet Show). I got hit by the nostalgia stick…hard.
