Getting a flu shot while pregnant can protect your baby after birth, a new study finds.
The research finds that a mother’s flu vaccine can protect a child for the first six months of life. That’s great news, since flu vaccines aren’t given to babies under six months old. Young children are some of the hardest hit when they do get the flu; their little bodies just can’t take all the vomiting and fever the way an adult body can.
If new research on smallpox and its relationship with AIDS bears fruit, parents may be adding one more vaccine to the arsenal of shots their kids get. The BBC reports that the vaccine used to wipe out smallpox offered some protection against the AIDS virus. Some scientists believe its disuse since smallpox was eradicated has helped the rapid spread of AIDS.
A lot of people might look at the anti-vax folks and wonder why it matters if those folks don’t get their kids vaccinated. If their kids get sick because they aren’t protected, it’s no skin off anyone else’s nose, right? Wrong. A new study shows exactly the opposite: vaccinating kids protects the entire community.
