Is the Rise in Terminating Half of a Twin Pregnancy OK?
For women who have had trouble conceiving, finally getting pregnant can feel like their one shot at having kids. Their friends and family secretly feel that, too. So when the news comes that its twins, it feels like a bonus. Perfect even, since if one kid for a woman or couple desperate to make a family is good, then two is even better.
But two isn’t always better, as readers of The New York Times Magazine learned. There are people who have gone to great expense and discomfort, both physical and emotional, to get pregnant and when the wound up with twins decided to go through with one and terminate the other. Continue reading »
Why Moms of Twins Live Longer
We always hear about how having twins is hard on mom, but a study of almost 60,000 women has turned up a surprising fact about moms of multiples: they tend to be healthier and live longer than moms who have one baby at a time.
The research, from the University of Utah, used historical data on 58,786 women, 4,603 of of whom had twins.
After the age of 50, mothers of twins were eight percent less likely to die each year than moms of singletons. Moms of twins also had more babies overall (even after factoring in doubling-up one time), babies closer together, and could have babies over a longer total age span.
In other words, moms of twins have some kind of super health power – for themselves and their offspring. Why would that be? Continue reading »
Compelling Video Evidence of My Parental Ineptitude
As many of you already know, I went from carefree bachelor to the father of four within 13 months thanks to marrying a single mom then quickly conceiving triplets. When it came to parenting, I was baptized by fire. Which, of course, means that there were plenty of times when I got burned — mostly by errors born of my inexperience. Luckily, most of those errors were relatively benign ones.
Still, no one likes to make mistakes. And the last thing I want is for my kids to look back upon their childhood and remember me as an inept dad. That’s why I’ve always tried to approach fatherhood with humility and a sense of humor. Because with those two things, I’m hopeful my kids won’t ever recall me as inept. But rather as a guy who did his best to learn from his mistakes, and, when applicable, as a guy who did his best to laugh at them as well.
With Triplets There is No Choice
For those of you who either know me or know some of my stories, you’d probably agree that I’m not usually at a loss for words. But I was just that when I first found out Caroline was pregnant with triplets. Given my workload at the time of the first ultrasound, Caroline and I both thought it’d be best if she went without me. Afterward, she swung by the office and took me out to lunch to break the news.
I’m not sure what I thought the ultrasound images would look like, but the first one I examined wasn’t what I expected. All I saw were a few white blobs, three more pronounced than the others, contrasting starkly against a black background. It certainly didn’t look like a baby to me. It looked more like an image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
“What are those blurry white things?”
Video: How Rude People Talk About Your Twins
Turns out, other people’s twins aren’t everybody’s business. (Other people’s triplets aren’t either.)
But moms of twins will tell you, that’s not common knowledge. Walk down the street with your same-aged kids and suddenly your reproductive health is fair game.
A new Mompetition video by xtranormal — these are the folks who brought you the hilarious “Why I Can’t Make Mom Friends,” — features the two robotic-sounding moms hitting all the highlights in the lows of good manners.

3 Times a Charm: Triplets, 7, Crowned Chess Champions
There are plenty of things I know I’ll never accomplish in life, such as a Miss America title (and not just because I’m a Mrs.), a Nobel Prize in anything that requires math, or a reality show that involves things like snakes, bachelorettes, babies, or addictions.
I also know I won’t ever be a national (international, regional or local) chess champion, so it’s heartwarming to hear that 7-year-old triplets from New Jersey actually are.
Andreas, Nicholas and Constantine Oskiper of East Windsor took home the title for teams of first graders earlier this month in the National Scholastic K-12 Chess Championship in Florida, which was likely the first time in history that triplets have achieved such a feat.
Celine Dion’s New Baby Boys are Really Triplets
By now, virtually everyone knows that Celine Dion recently gave birth to a pair of healthy baby boys. Strangely, it took Celine and hubby Rene almost an entire week to name the newest additions to their family — a fact which prompted Madeline Holler to ask the famous couple a question: What took you so long?
Some extremely sad news which recently surfaced has suddenly left me with a question that I’d like to ask Celine and Rene: Why do you refer to your newborns as twins?
