Sir Charles was right all along.
Detroit Tiger slugger Miguel Cabrera was charged with DUI last night. And while that’s never a good thing, his behavior during the arrest made the ordeal even worse than it had to be.
But my intention isn’t to pile on Miguel Cabrera. My intention, instead, is to say that Charles Barkley had it right all along. And Miguel Cabrera is just the latest athlete to prove it.
Steve Jobs
The National Enquirer is reporting that Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs has just six weeks to live. They’ve recently published pictures, which captured an extremely thin-looking Jobs going into the Stanford Cancer Center in Palo Alto, California. These images were reportedly captured on February 8 and represent the first hard evidence that Jobs, indeed, has cancer. Though it’s known that Jobs underwent a liver transplant in 2009, Apple’s front man has been very guarded about the details of his health. He’s on a medical leave of absence and has handed over the day-to-day control of the company, but other than that, little else had been reported until the Enquirer broke this story.

Krav Maga is not just for soldiers and cops anymore.
The lethal fighting technique developed and made infamous by the Israeli miltary is now being offered to children in classes around the country.
Forget about bowing to the sensei and memorizing martial arts forms. Krav Maga is all about “getting down and dirty in the interest of saving your own skin”, says the New York Times. Sweet.
The kids in Krav Maga classes learn about two-handed chokeholds, going for the eyes and how to cause the most damage with a hit to the face. Why do elementary school kids need these skills?
To use on strangers of course. The dangerous kind, that might pop out from behind any given shrubbery and attack you.
The New York Times set off a firestorm of criticism in the blogosphere this weekend with a snarky little piece titled, “Honey, Don’t Bother Mommy. I’m Too Busy Building My Brand“.
The article, written by Jennifer Mendehlson (herself a mommyblogger), skewers moms who blog for being too focused on the professional potential of blogging and not focused enough on…something else. Maybe the social aspects? Maybe their kids?
Likening mommyblogs to the Tupperware parties of our mothers’ day, Jennifer breezily mocks the women who gather at conferences like Mom 2.0 and Bloggy Boot Camp to learn “the latest must-have skill set for the minivan crowd.”
There is, I think, a fine line between wanting to give your child every opportunity you can and going overboard with tutors, coaches, and trainers just because you can. If a child is having difficulty or has a disability, it makes sense to get them help. But can there be such a thing as too much help? These days, it seems, well-to-do parents in New York are hiring occupational therapists to make certain their precious little snowflakes hold a crayon correctly. Before they even start preschool.
I fully admit that my knee jerk reaction against mom cards — basically “business” cards you hand out at the playground so other parents remember your name, child’s name and phone number — has a lot to do with profound jealously.
Who can possibly be this organized?

Ahhh yes, the news drought of the holidays is in full swing, begetting stories like this one from the unfortunately-named “The Mommy Files” blog: The Top Parenting Trends of 2009.
Okay, despite my snark, I think this is really more or less on the money. What’s writer Amy Graff’s take on what we were talking about this year?
One was recent — a New York Times magazine article from last week that talks about being married, happily, with issues. The very long article tracks a writer’s journey through various forms of marital therapy, and was actually very interesting in that many of the appraoches seemed to dredge up more problems than they actually solved.
