Savings here and there add up when you travel as a family
Family travel for me often means flying. Which, now that my third child has reached the age of 2, means shelling out for five plane tickets. Even with budget flights, the final cost has many, many zeros behind it. Plus tax. And various surcharges. Until my future teens decide to opt out, or we move closer to our extended families, it’s just something we know we’ll have to live with.
Still, I have figured out some ways to cut little expenses that, when calculated for five people, adds up. Here are 11 ways to cut family travel costs — be sure to add your own in comments. (No, really, I want to know!)

“Alaska Airlines Hates Families.” That’s the title of a blog started by Canadian couple Dan Blais and Colleen Roberge. The newlyweds were traveling with their eight-month-old son Levi when he blew out his diaper at Las Vegas Airport.
An employee at the Alaska Airlines gate told the couple they had two minutes to deal with the mess, but when Roberge emerged from the bathroom with her infant son, the airline had already given one of their tickets away.
Recently on a CNN comment board for a story about fragrance-challenged airline passengers, the discussion segued into on-board kiddos. Should parents be permitted to fly with babies and small children? Pro or con, there’s little doubt that people are passionate in their feelings on the subject.
Three-year-old Josh Pitney loved the Play-Doh he got from his grandma for Christmas. He loved it so much, in fact, that his parents packed it in their carry-on for the trip home to keep him entertained during the flight.
But when TSA screened the Pitney’s bags, security decided those cans of Play-Doh posed a threat. They could, after all, really be plastic explosive.
If you’re not worried about what those transportation security folks will see when you walk through an airport full body scanner, that’s fine. But British authorities are warning the scanners created “indecent” photos of children.
That’s right – they’re catching nekkid pictures of your kids when they toddle through the screening center on the way to Disney Land. (Possibly while having their Play-Doh taken from them.) Continue reading »
