How harmful is a water gun?
The recent, what seems like countless, tragedies surrounding kids and guns are really making me reconsider my typical rules regarding playing with toy guns.
Just today, Strollerderby’s Meredith wrote about a 4-year-old who was fatally shot by his sibling using a gun found in his own house. Like Meredith, I wonder why guns still are legally allowed in so many reckless households?
I admit I have mixed feelings on the subject of toy guns. I let my son play with water guns all the time. They’re fun and they keep him entertained for hours on end. I loved them when I was little. Last week as the weather warmed up, he wanted to take them to the playground but I felt uneasy about it, particularly because of an incident on my neighborhood a few months ago.
Guns have no place in schools. I think that most of us can agree on that. Whether carried by staff or students, the likelihood of a tragic outcome is, I believe, fairly high. Even if the weapon is never fired, its presence alone is enough alter the atmosphere and have a negative impact on the ability of students to learn. And so we have zero-tolerance policies in place at schools across the country. But how “zero” should they be?
A little boy died two years ago from choking on a toy dart, and now the Consumer Product Safety Commission has decided to do something about it. So less than two weeks before Christmas, they’re issuing a recall on the toy.
So much for a little advance warning. We understand recalls are serious business – and seriously expensive – which take serious investigation to kick off. Continue reading »

What kind of moron gives a little boy a toy gun that looks just like a real one? Apparently the same kind of moron that hasn’t taught their kid you don’t point it at someone . . . especially not to force them to hand over their toys.
An eleven-year-old in Ohio has been dragged into court for allegedly pointing a toy gun at two younger boys in an attempt to jack their scooters. Continue reading »
