Last year’s a-capella Hanukkah song “Candlelight” by the Maccabeats got over six million views on You Tube. The holiday-themed take on Taio Cruz’s hit “Dynamite” led the Maccbeats to internet fame and even a performance at the White House for President Obama.

This year, a new group is competing for the title of most-watched Hanukkah song on You Tube.  The Pella Singers new video “Holiday Party” was featured on the Today Show and is a take on Hot Chelle Rae’s “Tonight, Tonight”. Over 2 million children in the U.S. are unschooled.

I always thought that if I am ever someday forced to take my kids out of school due to our refusal to vaccinate,  I would rather unschool than homeschool.

Breastfeeding in public is not the same as "going to the bathroom in public".

STILL with the negative breastfeeding in public remarks? And this time on a national news show. I seriously am shocked that this continues to be an issue. Of course, breastfeeding laws mean nothing to The Today Show (Savannah Guthrie and Star Jones to name names).

It's one thing to cross against the light if you're only putting yourself in danger. How do you explain this, however?

When I lived in Manhattan I didn’t have kids so it’s probably not fair to judge, but I would still shake my head in disgust at the sight of moms who crossed the busy streets against a traffic light by stepping off the curb with their occupied baby stroller ahead of them.

It seemed (and still does) so frighteningly dangerous to me to essentially dangle your child as if it were your own toe into the water to assess the temperature. Your child is not your toe; if you want to attempt something that might have a less than happy ending (either scalding hot water or a speeding car), then you should be the one going first.

A happy dumpster is an empty one.

I’ve been obsessing about the Johnson family ever since I read about them in Sunset magazine a couple of months ago. The family of four (plus a dog) produce almost no trash.

No, really. In the last six months, the amount of trash they have sent to a landfill fits in Bea Johnson’s two hands.

But they’re not cabin-dwelling off-the-gridders like you might suspect from Bay-Area sustainable living types. Nor are they hoarders living among piles of garbage. No, they have a beautiful, clean, simple, yet fully stocked house — appliances and everything. And they have what could potentially be two of the biggest trash-magnets known to humanity: kids.

Many will be glued to their TVs today to get the latest on the the Japanese earthquake and the coming Tsunamis. And there is lot to see.

There is chilling video, stunning sad images and unsettling updates of what happened, and continues to happen as a result of the 8.9 earthquake and following tsunamis. In the wake of the quake there are Tsunami warnings from Hawaii, to Oregon to my home town of San Francisco.
