While some might insist that the proliferation of social networking sites, email and text messaging have allowed us all to have closer connections with more people than ever before, is it possible that just the opposite is true? Could all this technological interaction actually be turning our kids into a generation of anti-social creatures who someday might not even know how to have a real face-to-face relationship with another human being?

This week, Oprah had a moving op-ed piece in the New York Times about the danger of driving while using a cell phone. Whether you’re holding it or using a headset, talking or texting, there’s mounting evidence that using your phone in your car is just about as dangerous as driving drunk.
Most of us would never dream of getting behind the wheel after a few martinis, but we blithely pick up our phones while driving.
A few weeks ago, a friend posted about this problem to her blog. I was shocked by the number of parents who weighed in to say what I have always felt: my kids distract me, too.
At 15, Florida teen Slader Pich is probably old enough to stay home alone during the day. But that didn’t stop trouble from finding him.
The teen was home sick from school when he heard knocking on the front door. In typical teen fashion, he ignored it. When the banging continued, he reached for his cell to call his parents, when suddenly he heard someone running up the stairs.
If you have a teenager, sometimes it feels like you never actually see your child’s face. Sure, you remember what he looks like, but the only part of your kid your eyeballs come into contact with on a regular basis is the crown of his head as he types rapidly on the keypad of his cell. According to a study by Nielsen, you may be right.
Sure, you could spend your time worrying that your teens are sending risque pictures of themselves to their friends on their cellphone, but most likely they’re just sending messages like “I dunno. Wat u wnt 2 do?” back and forth. Or, if you’re really lucky, they may have gotten into keitai — writing novels on their cellphone. Yes, I know what you’re thinking — how could anyone write anything of substance, let alone an entire novel, on the tiny little keyboard of a cellphone? I’m not sure, but people are doing it and one Japanese fifteen-year-old has made more than half a million dollars doing it.
Buried in this Time Magazine “Time for Kids” survey is an interesting little tidbit about the texting habits of kids, age 9 to 13. Girls, it appears, text more than boys – a lot more. But almost all kids agree texting is not fine in class or at the dinner table.
Well A-freaking-men.
