The website When Parents Text have a couple of perfect taglines – “small keypad – old hands,” and “so much said…so little understood.” So true, so true.
When Parents Text’s collection of user submitted messages from mothers and fathers to their sons and daughters are totally and completely hilarious. Like laugh out loud, eyes watering, peeing in your pants funny. So funny that their collection is going offline and is being put into book form which will be released on September 1st.

The other day, Strollerderby blogger Danielle Sullivan shared her top 5 parenting pet peeves and asked readers to weigh in. Predictably, one reader named parents who text or look at their cell phones while in restaurants or at the park as one of her top pet peeves.
I say “predictably” because it’s one of those things I hear other moms complaining about pretty often.
It’s even something I found myself feeling judgy about last time I saw a mom texting at the park, until I realized, oops, that could be me!
Here’s the thing: I know it’s rude to Tweet during dinner or yap obliviously on the phone while the cashier is trying to make an actual human connection as she gives you your change. That’s why I rarely answer my phone when out and about, and almost always leave it in my purse when I’m doing something that requires concentration or conversation.
That said, sometimes sitting on the park bench, or while waiting for the school play to start? I have my phone in hand. Continue reading »
Mandy Gingerich, an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Butler University has been giving her students an interesting test that’s not part of the curriculum. For the past three semesters, she’s conducted a little experiment of her own. Students in her Cognitive Processes class are divided into two groups. One group is assigned to listen to her lecture about time management. The other group is directed to text message while listening to her lecture. Both groups are warned that there will be a test after the lecture. The non-texting students averaged 84.7 percent on the quiz, while the kids who texted during the lecture averaged 59.3 percent. In terms of grades, that’s a B and an F, respectively. I’m sure it comes as no surprise that the group who listened with undivided attention achieved higher test scores. What surprised me, however, is that this teacher still isn’t sure whether texting should be allowed in class or not.
Texting teens are more likely to engage in risky behaviors
Teens who text a lot are also more likely to engage in high-risk social behaviors like drinking, drug use, fighting, and sexual activity, a new study found.
Hyper-texters, or teenagers who send more than 120 text messages a day are at the highest risk for these behaviors, according to researchers at Case Western University.
Before you snatch your kid’s cell phone, though, take a look at the rest of her life. The research team isn’t suggesting that texting causes these risky moves. Rather, they see a strong correlation between kids who text a lot and kids who don’t get a lot of supervision and support at home.
Apple Inc.'s Keepin' It Clean
Worried that your kids might be receiving – or worse yet, sending – texts that are, how shall we say, a little *too* personal?
According to TechCrunch, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has just approved the patent for Apple’s “text-based communication control for personal communication device.” In other words, parents finally have an anti-sexting app at their fingertips – so children won’t have dirty words at theirs. At the risk of sounding old, I will admit that I don’t even understand why kids text each other all the time. It seems like a waste of time that accomplishes little more than to give one the appearance of being popular and in demand.
Looking important may be part of the appeal, but teens also like the ability to communicate with each other anytime, anywhere. But the acronyms and slang terms they use when texting aren’t designed just to save time and keystrokes. They are also meant to keep parents from knowing exactly what they are talking about.
