Nearly 10 years after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, researchers have uncovered some interesting numbers that show the lasting effects of that day and how humans react biologically to stress that is bey0nd the immediate and personal.
Population health researchers at the University of California — Irvine found a small but real rise in the number of miscarriages following the attacks. They also found that women who were pregnant with boys miscarried at a higher rate than women pregnant with girls. Continue reading »

The destruction of the World Trade Center and other attacks of September 11, 2001 have got to be some of the most horrendous acts of senseless violence ever to take place in the United States. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would paint those cowardly acts as honorable or noble. And yet, some high school students in Michigan — identified as Arab-Americans, no less — have been accused of doing just that.

As we approach the New Year, Vimeo user Allison Louie-Garcia has asked kids born in the year 2000 to look back on the last decade. Their fears about war and terrorism sadly bring the violence of the last decade into focus, but the questions are mostly light-hearted.
Asked, for instance, about the first time they used a computer, the kids say things like, “I think it was just around my second birthday.” Asked to identify Britney Spears, one kid says, “Isn’t that the girl that cut her hair bald?” And wait ’till you hear what they think the sound of a dial-up connection is.
