The little boy said the tattoo did hurt a little bit
A man in Georgia who committed an “egregious” crime got off with nothing more than a fine and probation. His toddler son will have a tattoo by which to remember the experience.
Earlier this week a judge ruled that Eugene Ashley must pay $300 and stay out of trouble for a year after he gave his son a tattoo on his shoulder that read “DB,” which stands for “Daddy’s Boy” in 2009. Math isn’t my strong suit, but I think that would have made his son just a year old at the time.
My kids love temporary tattoos. At one point recently, my younger daughter decorated her face with ”Dora the Explorer” tattoos. It was quite a conversation piece around the neighborhood– until the third bath when I was finally able to scrub them all off.
But, apparently, some folks think their kids deserve the real thing.
In February, Lee M. Deitrick, a 20-year-old Louisville, Ohio, man, was left to care for a friend’s 19-month old daughter. For some inexplicable reason, Dietrick decided to give the toddler a tattoo. As one of the girl’s 17-year-old relatives held the child across her lap, Deitrick tattooed the letter “A” on her buttocks. Deitrick was arrested and charged with felony child endangerment. “I don’t understand why this has gotten blowed up so big,” Patty Jo Marsh says in a videotaped interview. “I love my children. We’d never do anything to harm our kids.”
Nothing, except tattoo each with a homemade tattoo gun made out of cobbled up wiring and a sharpened guitar string, that is.
I have to apologize; I must admit that I did not watch the full video posted with this story. I did not because I could not. It’s not that I can’t handle violence or that I’m overly squeamish (though I’ll admit that I more than dislike needles and dentists). It’s that I can’t handle watching children being tortured without destroying my monitor in a futile attempt to climb through the screen and put a stop to it.

This story reminded me of something from my own childhood. Luckily what I did wasn’t nearly as permanent, or as weird. Either way, it’s a good example of when not to bother lying to your parents.
18 year-old Kimberley Vlaminck initially told her father — and the press — that she asked for three stars to be tattooed to her face. Then she fell asleep and woke up with 56 stars. On her face. She tried to sue Rouslan Toumaniantz, the tattoo artist, to get money for the laser surgery required to remove the unwanted tats.
But Kimberly wasn’t telling the truth. She just didn’t want her dad to be mad at her. Continue reading »
