Hershey's Kisses for a Cause

It’s probably fair to say that everyone has an opinion about chocolate and everyone’s stomach churns at the thought of a child with a brain tumor.  If you’re willing to take a few minutes to take a short survey, The Hershey Foundation will make a donation in support of the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation.  I took the survey, it really take about two minutes. And with Halloween around the corner, we might as well put all our information about candy to good use! You can take the survey here.

If you’re anything like me, you don’t get to spend anywhere near enough time with your kids and when you are with them, it seems like you’re always just shuttling them to and from piano lessons, dance classes, and so on — anything but spending quality time together.  I know the rare occasions when I’ve been off from work and the kids aren’t in school, we have a wonderful time together going for a picnic or visiting a museum or just sitting and watching the waves together.  It sure seems like I spend less time with my kids than my parents spent with me — but is that really the case?

Married women aren’t the only ones in the family pulling a second shift of housework after a long day at the office. The nation’s daughters are too!

In its “State of the Kid” report, Highlights for Children uncovered this disturbing fact: girls are significantly more likely than boys to have chores.

That’s not good.

Even though well more than half of the kids surveyed said they were expected to do chores around the house, almost three-quarters of those were girls, while two-thirds were boys. Chore results were the largest gender difference in the 10-question national survey.

Three out of four Oklahoma teenagers can’t name the first President of the United States.

That’s according to the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs, who commissioned a telephone survey of 1,000 Oklahoma high school students.  The teens were asked 10 questions from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services citizenship test, the test that immigrants need to take to become American citizens.  Only three percent of Oklahoma teens passed the test.  On the other hand, 92 percent of people applying for citizenship pass it on their first try.

There was a list of names I couldn’t use for my daughter – not because they were bad, per se, but they’d been used. Once a four-legged member of the family has a name, I’m sorry, but it’s been used up.
