Aiden has a message for the crook who stole his money.
All 9-year-old Aidan Sullivan wanted was to look normal. The son of a New York firefighter, Aidan was born with a rare disorder called hemifacial microsomia, which left the right side of his face underdeveloped. Having already undergone about 10 surgeries to repair facial deformities, Aidan was particularly excited about the next one – the first of three procedures that would finally give him an ear.
His family has medical insurance but Aidan’s doctors don’t take insurance. In order to pay for the surgeries, which will cost between $25,000 and $30,000, a fundraiser was held in Danbury, Connecticut on November 20 and the money poured in. In the end about $8,000 was raised and things were looking good for Aidan and his new ear.
Until someone crashed the fundraiser and made off with all the money.
Peter Drake, fundraiser organizer and family friend, says that he had put the box containing the money down for just a moment when it disappeared. The Danbury police aren’t commenting and it seems unlikely that the cash will ever be recovered.
Doctors in western Sweden have announced they will no longer perform circumcisions on newborn baby boys.
Their decision to suspend routine circumcisions isn’t another of Sweden’s enviably holier-than-the-rest laws regarding parents and babies (I’m thinking maternity leaves, breastfeeding rates, etc.). Rather, it’s a matter of resources. Watch out, this will also be fodder for those in the U.S. who oppose universal health care. Continue reading »
Some birth defects go unnoticed a person’s whole life. Baby Don’s wasn’t like that. Some birth defects are fatal. Thankfully, Baby Don’s wasn’t like that either. Unfortunately, the infant’s birth defect was one of those that not only was extremely noticeable but would have made the poor child’s life unpleasant at best. Baby Don was born without a chin. That meant he faced a life where even just breathing would be a painful challenge.
Lakshmi Tatma is pretty much like any 4-year-old. She’s a little bossy around new friends, likes to pay games with her brother, is a total daddy’s girl and just recently started school. The difference is Lakshmi was born with two torsos and 8 limbs. Oh, and she’s been worshipped as a God since birth.

Maybe that doesn’t seem out of the ordinary to you, maybe you see swimsuit modeling a natural next step to a controversial single mother of 37 kids. But maybe this will surprise you; she says she got back into swimsuit shape with no help at all. As in, no plastic surgery.
If you’ve already got nine kids, getting your tubes tied is certainly not an outrageous decision to make. Perhaps especially if you’re only 35, unmarried, unemployed, and at least partially dependent on public assistance. But even so, it is not a decision to be made lightly. It is a surgical procedure with all the risk that implies (mortality rate in industrialized nations is 4 in 100,000) and may cause post-procedural side effects. So imagine the outrage of a woman who went into the hospital for a cesarean section and came out with a tubal ligation as a bonus!
A 2-year-old boy is recovering after four of the most dangerous needles embedded into his body were removed by surgeons in Brazil. The aforementioned needles were found in the boy’s lung and near his heart. His stepfather sits in jail for forcing the implements into his son.
