It’s true most parenting magazines have mom-free names and try to insert a page or two “just for dad,” but the reason the overwhelming amount of content is geared toward the female persuasion has a lot less to do with the editors than it does the people who are paying to get the magazine out the door: the advertisers. Stop hanging your daycare-loving head in shame, Mom. A new study says what’s good for our sanity (and our paychecks) is also good for our circle of friends.
Researchers at the University of Chicago found that moms who put their kids in daycare were likely to have at least one more “good friend” than moms going it alone.

Lest we think it’s just here in the US that we tear each other to shreds over social policy, in Canada there’s been a huge controversy over Iris Evans, finance minister of the Canadian province of Alberta, making remarks that were critical of two-career families.
While answering questions after a speech to the Economic Club of Canada in Toronto, Evans said she believes good parenting means that one parent stays at home with the children while they are young, as her own children have done.
According to the CBC website, she said this: “They’ve understood perfectly well that when you’re raising children, you don’t both go off to work and leave them for somebody else to raise. This is not a statement against daycare. It’s a statement about their belief in the importance of raising children properly.”

Move over, women, there’s a new mom in town. He may go by the name “Dad,” but really? He’s Mommy.
Men parents have been encroaching on mom’s turf for some time now, but this year it seems to have reached a critical mass.
Let’s start with the research. Dad gains weight and experiences mood swings during pregnancy just like his pregnant wife — the original mom. Studies also show that Dad doesn’t value himself as a parent, which is such a self-deprecating and motherly thing to do. Continue reading »
