Should Dads be allowed to help at potty time?
According to Jezebel, Chicagoland mommy blogger Jenna Myers Karuvinidis freaked out when she found out that dads were helping out with bathroom duty (hee-hee, bathroom doodie!) at her daughter’s preschool. Jez quotes her ranting and raving about men being sexual predators (I mean, really!), but when I went to get the full scoop on Karuvinidis’ site, I noticed her original post has been pulled.

Poor Dad can’t catch a break. Everyone refers to it as mom’s house, mom’s room and mom’s kitchen, but when he’s the one to stay at home, he’s still worth nearly half as much as she is, according to a new survey by Salary.com.
It’s an annual survey that determines how dads would be paid if there were a paycheck attached to parenting (as if!). They use some fancy-schmancy method to determine the numbers, so it’s really (kind of) scientific.
The 10 most common “dad jobs” are day care center teacher, CEO, psychologist, cook, groundskeeper, laundry machine operator, computer operator, facilities manager, maintenance worker and van driver. (The mom jobs, by the way, are the same, but are appropriately bestowed with more delicate titles.)
Being good with kids makes a man attractive.
When I was kid, being a stay-at-home dad was basically unheard of in my neighborhood. Now, with added equality between the sexes, a faulty economy and many moms in high level positions, it has become more widespread, if not common. Our society has grown more accepting of pushing past stereotypical gender roles. Yet there are still certain circles where you’ll overhear moms on the playground gossiping about the stay-at-home dads as if they are a new breed of men. There may be some truth to that because these men don’t feel the need to have to slip into the skin of a typical alpha male in order to feel confident.
But I’ve also heard from many men throughout the years who feel intimidated, out of place and even emasculated when they are the only dad at Gymboree, on the playground or at a birthday party. That has to change so more men will feel comfortable with taking on a bigger role in raising children. Is there anything as attractive as a rugged, macho (if you will) man tenderly caring for his kids?
Baby brain. You can’t explain it to people who don’t have children – it’s a phenomenon only parents can understand. You’re sleep deprived, you’re busier than ever, you’ve got a whole new set of skills to teach and potential disasters to avert. No wonder you can’t remember anything! One new Dad has found a way of overcoming that dastardly mental deficiency: he leaves himself notes all over the house, reminding himself “what to do, and sometimes more importantly, what not to do when raising a child.”

Ask any dad how much time he spends on childcare every week, and he may overestimate the hours spent changing diapers, feeding picky toddlers, and playing tag in the backyard. In a recent piece at Slate, Katherine Reynolds Lewis says that’s a good thing.
It’s called aspirational lying, says Lewis, the kind of lying we all do to make ourselves look better. In previous generations, men downplayed the number of hours they actually spent with their kids, because child care was considered women’s work. But today’s dads, freed from the bonds of those strict gender roles, want to be the kind of partner that splits childcare 50-50 with their working wife.
They just aren’t quite there yet.

A survey of 15,000 American women discovered that female breadwinners ride their husbands about housework and childcare because they’re worried about losing touch with their “feminine” identity.

I’m pretty sure every kid growing up in the ’80s read Stephen King’s short story, The Body — which was turned into the fabulous movie Stand By Me.
Hearing stories about the making of the movie is the absolute only thing I’m interested in reading now that one of the stars, Jerry O’Connell, has inked a deal to write a memoir.
Only problem is his book is about his latest role: stay-at-home dad.
