The Microsoft Kin is a cute little social networking device that plays into the average teen’s desire to be constantly connected to everyone he or she has ever met – or hasn’t met. Billed as a Gen-Y social networking tool, the Kin has a slide-out keyboard, a camera and easy access to all the texting, tweeting and Facebooking a teen could ever want. It’s cute, it’s fun and, according to the Website, lets users share life as they are living it.
Microsoft is clearly attempting to be edgy and appeal to teens in their advertisements for the Kin. Their latest ad, however, is drawing criticism for encouraging young people to engage in risky behavior. Continue reading »
Afraid your teen might be using her cell phone to send naughty pictures to her boyfriend?
You probably don’t want your kids sending or receiving sexy texts for a variety of reasons, but one of the biggest threats is starting to be tamed. States are rethinking how they handle these cases legally, according to the New York Times. Many are moving away from using child pornography laws to go after kids who pass nude photos of themselves to a partner or friend.
Chances are, that by the time your kids hit their teens, they’ll have cell phones burning holes in their hot little pockets. Cell phones with cameras. Some of them will almost certainly use those cameras to take nude or sexually explicit photos of themselves, their girlfriends, or that guy on the back of the bus that dared them to do it.
Then a few will use the magic of modern cellular networks to forward those pictures to their crushes, their friends, or just maybe their entire English class.
And unless current laws change, they’ll be creating and trafficking in child pornography when they do it. Those are federal felony charges that can send kids to prison, and create criminal records that will haunt them for life.

Worried that your teen might decide to take up sexting, that disturbing new teen trend where kids send naked pictures of themselves to friends? At least it’s safer than what one New Zealand teen did.
Skipping the cell phone altogether, Cherelle May Dudfield, 18, decided to go viral right there on a four-lane highway.
And then one of those motorist got distracted and hit her.
A few months ago, young teen Hope Witsell was found hanging in her bedroom. Her suicide was apparently a response to relentless bullying at school following an incident in which she sent a topless photo of herself to a boy, who showed it around the school.
Witsell was punished by her parents and by school administrators for her “crime”, and the taunting by her classmates continued unabated into a new school year.
Was this death by sexting?
You’d expect a celebrity like Beyonce or Leonardo DiCaprio to be used to grab teenagers’ attention. But James Lipton?
