No matter how much it’s anticipated, a visit to Santa can end up being a traumatic experience in the end. A winking, red-nosed guy with a huge, jiggling stomach can inspire fear in the tiniest tots…even if he’s there to grant their wishes. But what if Santa is a bit, well, creepy? What if the very sight of him makes Mom and Dad’s skin crawl too?
As much as we may try to shield our kids from our financial worries, they know what’s going on. And this time of year, as cash-strapped parents struggle to provide the basic necessities for their families, kids are looking to Santa for help. Reports from Santa’s lap indicate that instead of iPods and laptop computers, worried children are asking for eye glasses and socks. And jobs for their unemployed parents. Continue reading »
Last year, my then three-year-old wanted one thing for Christmas: Groovy Girls. Groovy Girl dolls, Groovy Girl beds, Groovy Girl cars. One look at the prices left me a little dizzy, until I got the idea to look them up on Craigslist. Low and behold, there was an 11-year-old girl selling her entire collection. For $20.
The Labatt beverage company wants you to keep one thing in mind this holiday season: Santa’s driving, so make sure his beer’s non-alcoholic.

There’s a rumor going around first grade that’s spreading fast: Santa isn’t real. That’s thanks to one six-year-old boy whose big sister let him in on the secret. It’s got parents scrambling for an answer this week, and though my own kid hasn’t put me on the spot just yet, I’m expecting it any day.
Hearing that news from other kids is one thing. Hearing from an adult that is not your parent is another.
