Whether you take your kids to McDonald’s or not, you have to admit their marketing team really put their thinking caps on for this one.
As you have probably heard, the city of San Francisco decided to institute a ban on Happy Meals (meals that include toys) because they aren’t up to nutritional standards — and that ban is set to take effect tomorrow, December 1st. This ban is intended to draw attention to childhood obesity and help parents make healthier choices for their children because the lure of the toy would no longer be available.
Now, assuming you even think this is the case… that parents and kids will make different choices without a toy calling their name, (I don’t)… you still have to admit, it seems McDonald’s has found a way to way to outsmart the city’s lawmakers. Sure the toy won’t come with the Happy Meal, but you can still get one. Cheap. Oh? And now, when you do, you’re helping charity.

In a case that highlights the importance of thorough sperm donor screening, it has been revealed that a donor from the early 1990′s passed on a genetic heart defect to nine of his 24 children. According to a report published the Journal of the American Medical Association, one of those children died at the age of two and two others have developed symptoms and are determined to be at risk for sudden cardiac death.
The defect, Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, causes thickening of the heart and those afflicted often don’t exhibit any symptoms until adolescence. However, the sperm donor, who has not been named, was unaware of his condition until after a child born from his sperm was diagnosed. One of the children found to have inherited his condition was born to the donor’s own wife. Continue reading »

A couple of weeks ago I took on a daunting challenge. I took my 3-year-old daughter on a cable car ride. Being a San Francisco native, our cable cars are something I hold dear…and apparently so do all tourists who come to my fair city. The line for the ride? Painfully long. By the time we got on the cable car packed with people, no one volunteered to give up their seat for a woman (me) who was clearly having trouble keeping her toddler under control and safe.
