Today will go down as a sad one in the history of women as the House voted to strip Planned Parenthood of federal funding
Earlier today the House of Representatives passed a measure 240-185 that would bring an end to federal funding for Planned Parenthood. After the final passage on some underlying spending bills, the bill will head to the Senate for a possible vote later this month.
If the amendment goes into law, the measure would cut $330 million through the end of September for the organization. While federal law prohibits its dollars from providing abortion services, Planned Parenthood also provides family planning, HIV tests and preventative cancer and other medical screenings.
“Black children are an endangered species,” read the billboards along Georgia’s highways this month. The signs were paid for by Georgia’s largest anti-abortion organization, Georgia Right to Life. The group’s primarily white staff bought the ads as part of a campaign to woo more black women to their cause.
Georgia’s Right to Life is picking up on a larger effort by anti-choice groups around the country to frame abortion as a racist practice and organizations like Planned Parenthood as part of a vast conspiracy to prevent the births of black children.
It’s an impossible situation: Your one-year-old baby is sick with a severe and progressive disease that leaves him without any quality of life, so sick that even his doctors recommend removing him from life support, sick enough that you can actually begin to imagine that letting him go is the right thing to do.
Or maybe not.
A teenager who couldn’t get an abortion at seven months because her state bans late-term abortions has been accused of hiring someone to beat her up – in hopes it would terminate the pregnancy.
But now a judge says the abortion laws of the state protect her from prosecution for her part in the beatings. Continue reading »
A Republican lawmaker in Ohio has re-introduced a bill that would give a man the final choice on whether the woman he got pregnant could have an abortion.
Dubbed the “father’s right bill,” it would give the man the right to stand up and say he doesn’t want the fetus he contributed DNA to to be aborted. But it says nothing about then forcing him to be a good father or provide financial stability. Continue reading »
