If new research on smallpox and its relationship with AIDS bears fruit, parents may be adding one more vaccine to the arsenal of shots their kids get. The BBC reports that the vaccine used to wipe out smallpox offered some protection against the AIDS virus. Some scientists believe its disuse since smallpox was eradicated has helped the rapid spread of AIDS.
For several years, a growing group of parents of children with autism have argued that a change in diet changed their child’s behavior. They eliminated gluten and casein from all meals. Some reported immediate results — better behavior, better sleep, improved bowel patterns.
Celebrity mom Jenny McCarthy even claimed diet changes helped her son “recover” from autism (she’s not claiming a cure, just a change).

Diets don’t work, conventional wisdom says. Statistics seem to back that up: 92 percent of people who diet do not lose weight, and 18 percent actually wind up heavier.
Maybe the reason is that dieters are eating more than they believe. A wide-ranging British study turns up a lot of unpleasant details about what people do when they diet.
How a child his born into this world can influence the types and mix of bacteria in the intestines. The type of mix, in turn, determines the person’s risk for developing celiac and Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
German researchers wondered if children who developed these diseases had a higher rate of c-section birth. As it turns out, children who had been diagnosed with celiac — a disease in which eating gluten triggers the body’s immune system to attack and damage the small intestines — were significantly more likely to have been born via c-section.
Marriage has a lot of health benefits, but for women it can be a mixed bag. Science Daily reports that marrying a much younger man can shorten your lifespan. The effect holds true for marrying substantially older men as well, but is less pronounced.
Men, on the other hand, get a huge benefit from marrying a woman substantially younger than they are. Guys with young wives live longer, healthier lives than their peers who married someone their own age.
