The manufacturer of a popular homeopathic teething relief for children, Hyland’s Teething Tablets, has issued a voluntary recall, which the FDA echoed today.

In recent days in light of the large scale Similac Baby Formula recall, a federal lawsuit has been filed in a Chicago Federal Court.
The lawsuit which has been brought against Abbott, the company that owns Similac Baby Formula, by Maria C. Kiely on behalf of her infant son claims the company knew about the problem with the tainted baby formula six full days before the recall was announced. Continue reading »
Fisher-Price recall: Is your kid's trike affected?
Time to weed out the toy bin, with a little extra urgency: Fisher-Price has announced that it’s recalling more than 10 million toys, trikes and high chairs over concern that they could injure children.
Among the items being recalled:
About 7 million Fisher-Price Trikes and Tough Trikes toddler tricycles, which have been implicated in the injuries of 10 children, six of them requiring medical attention, the Associated Press reports. (The Dora the Explorer and Barbie models are among those being recalled.) The problem stems from the protruding plastic ignition key, which kids can bash into or fall or sit on and hurt themselves, possibly causing genital bleeding.
After the death of a 4-month old baby girl who died while strapped into a Nap Nanny, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of 30,000 of the popular baby recliners.
The infant, who was properly strapped into the foam-based bed, was discovered hanging over the side of the Nap Nanny, wedged between the recliner and the bumper of her crib. According to the CPSC and Baby Matters, the manufacturer of the Nap Nanny, the recliners are not designed to be used in a crib and should always be placed securely on the floor away from any other products. Who can you trust these days? First, Children’s Liquid Tylenol and other kids’ drugs were recalled. Then a slew of baby cribs were recalled and last month, Kellogg’s Corn Pops, Honey Smacks, Froot Loops, and Apple Jacks were recalled. At the time, Kellogg’s said the recall was due to “uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell coming from the liner in the package,” an issue that could cause temporary nausea and diarrhea.
But now The New York Times reports that “the real culprit behind the recall is a class of chemicals now making news in the Gulf of Mexico: hydrocarbons, a byproduct of oil.”
In particular, hydrocarbon methylnaphthalene was behind the recall of around 28 million cereal boxes. Continue reading »
Getting your teeth cleaned usually gives you a reason to smile, but unfortunately not this week. It was announced yesterday that the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled 70,000 charm bracelets and rings containing high levels of the the toxic metal cadmium. The trinkets have been distributed to kids at medical and dental offices over the past five years, according to the AP.
The AP stresses that “Cadmium is a naturally occurring metal that, if ingested, can weaken bones and kidneys. Kids could be exposed if they bite and suck on jewelry containing cadmium.” My daughter and I just visited the dentist last week, and she picked out a little pink metal ring as a prize at the end of the visit. Despite my admonishment, she chewed and sucked on it until it was too bent for her to wear, and yesterday I threw it out. I would not be surprised if it came from a similarly unregulated Chinese supplier. As I reported earlier, it’s best – though difficult – not to allow your kids to have cheap jewelry. This is a big week for lead.
We reported Monday that lead has been found in several major and private-label brands of juice and packaged fruit. Today, the Good Housekeeping Research Institute announced that after testing children’s jewelry from Claire’s, Target and Walmart for lead, they found that “every piece of jewelry tested greatly exceeded the government’s lead limit allowed for children’s products,” up to 124 times the permissible level.
Additionally, most pieces they tested contained cadmium, the poisonous substance found in the paint on the Shrek glasses McDonald’s recently recalled. Unfortunately, this isn’t anything new. Back in January, SD blogger Sandy reported that the Associated Press found high levels of cadmium in children’s jewelry from the same retailers. Continue reading »
