Another Tylenol Recall
Parents, check your medicine cabinets, there is another recall of more over-the-counter Tylenol products.
In a statement, a unit of Johnson & Johnson said that it was conducting a voluntary consumer recall of one product lot of eight-hour extended-release caplets because of a “musty or moldy odor.” About 34,000 bottles are being recalled although the company says any health risk from the caplets is “remote”.
The company also announced it’s expanding a previous recall announced in January. Unlike the Tylenol caplet recall, the expanded recall, which involves 10 lots of other products, is being undertaken on the wholesale level and is not based on adverse events, according to the company. FDA Recalls Toxic Candy
I came across this story on Yahoo news today about Toxic Waste® brand Nuclear Sludge® Chew Bars candy being recalled because it’s (wait for it … ) toxic… and thought: “Nah… this is some kind of joke.”
So, I clicked over to the FDA web site, and sure enough—there it is, for immediate release: “Candy Dynamics Recalls Toxic Waste® brand Nuclear Sludge® Chew Bars. (All flavors, by the way.)
Turns out that a recent test performed by the California Department of Public Health has indicated that a lot (#8288A) of the cherry flavor of the candy contains elevated levels of lead (0.24 parts per million; the U.S. FDA tolerance is 0.1 ppm) that potentially could cause health problems, particularly for infants, small children, and pregnant women.
The candy is imported from Pakistan, and distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail orders. (You can rest assured that no other “Toxic Waste®” brand product is affected by this recall.)
Err… there are just so many things wrong with this picture, I simply have no words. So, allow me to instead share some of the sentiments from people on the Yahoo article: Continue reading »
Another Drop-Side Crib Recall
Nearly 90,000 more drop-side cribs have been recalled in the United States. This time the recall involves the Bassettbaby crib sold in popular baby retailers through August of this year.
The crib, like many other drop side cribs that have already been recalled pose the risk of strangulation, or suffocation to infants. The drop-side portion of the crib can malfunction causing dangerous space between the railings and the mattress, which a child can become trapped.
Parents are advised to immediately stop using this crib, and order the repair kit through the manufacturer Bassettbaby. Parents can also call 1-800-308-7485 for information on obtaining the repair kit to fix the dangerous problem.
Unfortunately for parents and children all over the country, drop-side cribs have been getting a bad rap, rightfully so. Since they became popular there have been a number of recalls prompted by injured children, and many don’t think it will be long before the cribs are pulled off the market altogether or banned from being sold. I fully believe they should be banned completely. We have dismantled our own drop-side crib and transformed it into the toddler bed function out of fear for the product safety. Continue reading »
Cold Medicine Recall Lowers ER Visits in Children
Hospitals and children do not mix, at least according to children. Even as adults most of us don’t care for being in the hospital. Now almost three years after over the counter cold medicine for infants was removed from the market a new government study shows ER visits in these same infants have been cut in half.
In October of 2007 a voluntary recall swept the market pulling all cold and cough medicine intended for children two years and younger, one year later that was extended to children ages four and under. Continue reading »
Orval Kent Recalls 23 Products!
The Orval Kent food company has issued a voluntary recall on 23 of their food products. The company has described this recall as a precautionary measure because they may contain cilantro that was recalled by Epic Veg, Inc.
The Epic Veg recall was due to the potential of contamination with Salmonella. Orval Kent’s supplier Field Fresh Foods originally distributed the cilantro. Continue reading »
Hyland’s Teething Tablets Back in 2011
In late October, the news of a voluntary recall on the popular over the counter, homeopathic teething relief for children sparked controversy all over the internet. Inconsistent amounts of ingredients in the tablets themselves sparked the FDA to step in.
Two weeks later the word is out that a new, and reformulated version of the popular teething tablets will be available again. Unfortunately for many parents who are anxiously awaiting the availability, it will not be back on shelves until after the new year. Continue reading »
Britax Recalls 17,000 Car Seats!
Britax, one of the Nations most popular car seat manufactures has been recalled. The recall involves 17,251 car seats that were built between built between April 11, 2009, and May 31, 2010.
The concern sparking the recall is an incorrectly produced chest clip on the Chaperone model car seats according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The defective chest clip has the possibility of being too brittle, and may break when used properly in the infant seats. The broken clip could cause serious injury in the case of an accident, and even cut or stab the infant with the sharp, broken plastic edges. Continue reading »
