Yelling at your shy kid can produce an aggressive, rule-breaking truant. So says the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. In a study published in an upcoming issue, children who are “introverted, non-conscientious, non-benevolent or imaginative” are deeply affected by overreactive parenting styles.

What with all the massively unsettling stuff going on in the world right now — recession, foreclosures, unemployment, and war, to name a few — it’s small wonder we’re not all running around with raging anxiety disorders. But there’s increasing evidence that true, debilitating anxiety, the kind that severely limits your life, is something that people are predisposed to, or not, from birth.
This fascinating, long article in the New York Times Magazine from yesterday describes how Harvard psychology professor Jerome Kagan followed subjects from babyhood through adulthood. He found that babies that were highly reactive to novelty — that is, that responded unhappily to new things — were much more likely to have anxiety disorder as teens and adults.

Scientists in fields like psychology, neuroscience, robotics and education are beginning to explore the idea of forming a new discipline that blends all those related bodies of knowledge into a focused study of how children learn.
New research based on that model, that looks at issues like dyslexia, can now predict that babies are prone to the condition and start early interventions that can lessen or prevent it in the majority of kids who would get it.

Since my family aren’t big TV watchers, I was a little slow to be introduced to Caillou, but I recently got a chance to plow through a pile of books based on the TV series (which is based, apparently on an older set of books).
For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon, the series stars a four-year-old boy in “real life” situations like getting lost at the grocery store or having his first sleepover. They’re written with a lot of participation from a child psychologist, with the goals of showing a realistic kid experiencing realistic emotions and being treated with respect by the adults.
