Lesbian teen Constance McMillen won her day in court last month, but was still
Stroll through any department store today and you will likely notice a proliferation of fancy party dresses. From a distance, these frocks look perfectly lovely and totally appropriate for a teen girl attending her prom. But look a little closer and you may think you’ve accidentally wandered into a Fredericks of Hollywood boutique.
As if 18-year-old Constance McMillen didn’t have enough obstacles to overcome in her life, she now has the distinction of being the person who got her high school prom canceled.
Back in the age of the dinosaurs, aka 1995, I went to prom with a charming young man. I wore a long, lacy purple dress. He wore a black miniskirt and a baby-doll t-shirt with the words “Prom Queen” stencilled across the chest in frilly lavender script. Guess which one of us got to dance with the captain of the football team? Hint: it wasn’t me.
I’m all for adding an artistic component to prom, which is usually far too stilted and image-conscious to be much fun at all. But I have to admit that the
