A lesbian student is being denied the opportunity to bring the date of her choice to her school's prom
I could go back in time and chat with my high school self, I’d let her know that the prom is no big whoop. The expectations are high, and the night will never live up to the hype. Ever. Really.
But of course, when you’re in the teen moment, it can seem like there is nothing more important than the prom. Which is why I feel sad for one girl in particular who was told by her school that she can’t attend with the date of her choice – another girl.
Angelina Lange, 17, lives in Bay Shore, New York, and was turned down by the administrators of her school when she asked if she could bring her ex-girlfriend as her date.
All he wanted was to be queen for a day.
Omar Bonilla, a gay teen at Pembroke Pines high school in Florida was one of the top three finalists for his school’s coveted prom queen position. Then school officials issued a spurious two-day suspension preventing him from attending prom at all.
Lesbian teen Constance McMillen won her day in court last month, but was still robbed of her chance to dance with her girlfriend at her high school prom.
The girls were misdirected by parents, other teens and school administrators to a fake prom at a local country club while her classmates partied at a secret prom organized by parents.
Stroll through any department store today and you will likely notice a proliferation of fancy party dresses. From a distance, these frocks look perfectly lovely and totally appropriate for a teen girl attending her prom. As if 18-year-old Constance McMillen didn’t have enough obstacles to overcome in her life, she now has the distinction of being the person who got her high school prom canceled.
McMillen, with the assistance of the Mississippi chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, had petitioned the Itawamba County School District Board to allow her attend the Itawamba Agricultural High School prom with her date. The problem, at least as the school board sees it, is that McMillen is a lesbian and her prospective date is a girl. Continue reading »
Back in the age of the dinosaurs, aka 1995, I went to prom with a charming young man. I wore a long, lacy purple dress. He wore a black miniskirt and a baby-doll t-shirt with the words “Prom Queen” stencilled across the chest in frilly lavender script. Guess which one of us got to dance with the captain of the football team? Hint: it wasn’t me.
I guess we were trendsetters, because the New York Times now reports that schools are cracking down on kids’ cross-dressing to proms – or just to class. Are these teens finding a clever new way to stick it to the dress code, or just exploring their honest gender expression? Does it matter?
I’m all for adding an artistic component to prom, which is usually far too stilted and image-conscious to be much fun at all. But I have to admit that the artistic flare two British 16-year-olds brought to their prom makes me feel slightly nauseated. Continue reading »
