In a world of scheduled inductions and c-sections, there are ways to make that happen. But while it’s sometimes medically necessary to deliver a baby before he or she is due, doctors are warning that — contrary to popular belief — it’s not perfectly safe to deliver a before 39 or 40 weeks.

“Are you sure it broke?” she asked.

“Uhhhh, yeah.  Pretty sure.”

“I just saw you yesterday, and I told you that you wouldn’t be ready to go for at least another week.”

I contemplated and rejected at least three different responses before taking a very deep breath and saying, “Should I come to the hospital now or wait until my contractions start?”

“FINE.  Come in,” she grumbled.  My second daughter was born 12 hours later.

Fitting a seat belt over a baby bump is tricky, but a British entrepreneur thinks he’s got the answer.  Stephen Weston has invented a pregnancy safety harness for pregnant drivers that eliminates the lap belt and that would spread the force of impact across the shoulders and upper body instead.  Take a look:

lying down sm250 They Say: Lie Still to Get PregnantAccording to researchers, there is one thing that women undergoing artificial insemination can do that might help increase their chances of getting pregnant: Nothing.

In a study of intrauterine insemination success rates,  390 couples were given three cycles of treatment.  Half the women were instructed to lie still for fifteen minutes after the procedure.  The other half were allowed to get up and move around immediately after the treatment.  After the first cycle, 10% of the women who were still for fifteen minutes became pregnant.  This is compared to 7% of the women who were active immediately after the procedure. bill maher Swine Flu   Why Bill Maher Is Being an IdiotBill Maher recently twittered that “if u get a flu shot ur an idiot.”  And in last Friday’s show, during an interview with former Senator Bill Frist, he also urged pregnant women not to get the swine flu vaccine.

I do not think Bill Maher is an idiot.  In fact, I’m a regular view who — until he starts talking about breastfeeding and vaccines — tends to agree with him.  But on this, he’s being stupid. Continue reading »
