A pediatrician in Florida is giving preggo patients experimental hormone treatments in the hopes of preventing their future daughters from becoming lesbians.This isn’t quite what I had in mind when I suggested that more drugs should be tested on pregnant women.
The hormone, dexamethasone (also called “dex”), has not been shown to be safe for pregnant women or their unborn children. The FDA hasn’t approved it for use in pregnant women, but a few researchers think it shows promise in preventing “ambiguous genitalia” in babies: genitals that are neither clearly male nor female.
Maria New and her colleagues at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine are taking it a step further, and experimenting to see if the drug can prevent lesbianism in girl babies. They also hope to “help” girls grow up to be wives and mothers. Their dream is to find a cure not only for queerness, but also for an “abnormal” disinterest in babies, marriage and “women’s work”.
It seems that just about everyone could benefit from more vitamin D.
According to a new study, pregnant women could — and probably should –consume 10 times more vitamin D than current guidelines recommend, according to CNN/Health.com.
This news comes just a couple of months after a study saying that babies need more vitamin D.
Doctors had long worried that too much vitamin D during pregnancy could cause birth defects, but new research shows that doubling vitamin D could in fact, reduce the risk of complications. Continue reading »
Here’s your head-shaking moment of the day: Bravado, purveyors of the most comfortable nursing bra in all the world (unpaid and unsolicited endorsement from me, there) is drawing flak at some lingerie trade shows because of their practice of using real live pregnant women as models in runway shows.
At two separate runway shows held as part of the CURVExpo trade shows, venues — or perhaps other exhibitors — have balked at having very pregnant women parading down the catwalk in their underwear. Continue reading »
Nokia, the world’s largest manufacturer of cell phones, is suing Apple, makers of the world’s most hyped mobile device, the iPhone. Nokia says Apple is infringing on various patents, and wants a royalty payment of 1-2% for every iPhone Apple has sold. How much money is that? $400 million, according to the BBC. ($6 to $12 per phone… Apple has sold 30 million iPhones… OK… carry the two…) EngadgetMobile says we should “stay tuned for a fun decade or so of litigation” — sounds about right. It’s the time of year when pregnant women gaze down desperately at their swollen bellies and ask: what kind of Halloween costume can I possibly wear in this condition?
Actually, the possibilities are pretty endless. Last year around this time, I wrote a post that offered up seven Halloween costume ideas for pregnant chicks (all of which are still valid … well, except for Bristol Palin). Now, in an effort to give women-with-child even more Halloween costume options, here is a brand new list for 2009, complete with 10 Oct. 31st ensembles that work perfectly when you’re knocked up. A couple of these are more effective as one-half of a couples costume, but most work as solo numbers, too. And none of them involve painting a target or a stop sign on your bare belly.
