If your little one was born prematurely, you may be in for a lifetime of health troubles
Premature babies face major health risks at birth, and often require months of intensive medical care.
The health risks don’t stop when they head home from the hospital. A new study finds that people born prematurely face a substantially increased risk of dying as young adults. For the most part, if they survive infancy, they make it through childhood and adolescence. But between the ages of 18 to 36, survivors of preterm birth are at a higher risk of death than their peers who were born at term.

A new long-term study of preemies shows mixed forecasts for the little ones’ futures.
On the one hand, they’re more likely to become ill, suffer heart problems and face academic and social challenges, even into adulthood. On the other hand, researchers say babies born early prove to be extremely resilient. Supportive parents and schools can go a long way towards cultivating this trait, helping preemies get a leg up on the challenges they face.

You would think that premature babies would be given the utmost protection, especially in a hospital. But it looks like the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center has done just the opposite. State inspectors have found that at least 27 infants’ have been irradiated beyond the chest area without proper shielding. Astoundingly, some premature infants were over-radiated more than once.
Back in February, The New York Times broke a story about how premature infants were regularly being unnecessarily exposed to radiation back in 2007 at Downstate Medical Center. Hospital officials quickly said they would stop this practice, but when state inspectors went into the hospital, they discovered the practice was again being performed.
An Australian couple was reportedly flown to New York this weekend to share the incredible story of their newborn son’s survival with execs at NBC. Their tale is certainly worth a Move of the Week. Mother Kate Ogg “amazed the world after she revived her ‘dead’ little boy by cradling him in her arms, skin-to-skin, tearfully stroking him in what she believed would be a final farewell.” Her twins, Jamie and Emily, were born prematurely at 27 weeks. Cross-nursing may not yet (if ever) be a mainstream way to feed a baby, but according to USA Today, the demand for donated breast milk is on the rise.
While many moms aren’t necessarily comfortable letting another woman nurse their baby, breast milk from milk banks — where donations are tested and pasteurized — are much more popular. And more women are also making informal arrangements where a nursing mother helps out a friend who’s struggling to breastfeed by sharing her milk.
Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar haven’t ruled out Baby No. 20.
“We’ll just wait and see what God has in store,” says Michelle in the Feb. 8 issue of People magazine.
It’s hard to believe the couple would risk another — and another and another? — pregnancy after what they experienced with child No. 19, daughter Josie Brooklyn. She was born at 25 weeks gestation and weighed only 1 pound 6 ounces. She’s around 8 weeks old and is still in the NICU at a Little Rock hospital.
