You know what I’m finding most troubling about this whole process? (Other than the idea that we will continue to have a nation full of people without any health insurance whatsoever.) I woke up with the worst politics-inspired hangover of my life today.
Until yesterday, I thought I lived in the bluest of the blue bubbles, politically speaking. Massachusetts, home of gay marriage, universal health care (of sorts) and decriminalized pot. We’re like a suburb of Amsterdam.
What happened here? It’s the question everyone around me is asking this morning.
Last night was reserved for potty-mouthed rage. Today my progressive friends are starting to look around and ask what went wrong. They’re not alone. Pundits all over the country are getting in on the act.
The MOTHERS act has become part of the Senate’s health reform bill. This law, if passed, provides for education and screening about post-partum depression and related mood disorders.
Supporters of the bill believe it will help to lessen the stigma about maternal mood disorders and get more women the help they need. Opponents claim it will provide the pharmaceutical industry an insidious mechanism to push dangerous. Continue reading »

The woman who played the most influential role in Joe Biden’s life, his mother Catherine Biden, passed away at the age of 92.

I can think of a lot of women that are wonderful role models for kids and, yes, I’d even call them heroes. Women like Rosa Parks who stood (or, rather, sat) against racial inequality, Eleanor Roosevelt who reminded us that women could be leaders too, and Rear Admiral Grace Hopper who not only gave us the computers we use everyday but also the term “bug” to mean a glitch in a computer system. These are women I’d be happy to have my children look up to and try to emulate. Former Alaskan Governor and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, though? Not so much.
We already got the skinny on how to be a Disney Princess (“skinny”, incidentally high on the list) now it’s the princes’ turn.
