Susan G. Komen Official Resigned In Protest Over Planned Parenthood Cuts
Don’t let the Susan G. Komen foundation convince you for a moment that the funding cuts to Planned Parenthood weren’t politically motivated.
As my colleague Katherine wrote this morning, the organization’s founder is a Republican who recently hired a conservative politician as senior vice president of policy. Not everyone at Komen was on board with the newly conservative agenda.
The Atlantic reports that the organization lost one of their top people when they made the decision to cut Planned Parenthood’s funding. Mollie Williams, Komen’s former head of public health, resigned in protest over the decision.
Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Nancy Brinker Fights Back
On Monday we told you the news that the Susan G. Komen Foundation decided to cease funding Planned Parenthood.
The backlash over that decision has reached far and wide, with Planned Parenthood raising more than $400,000 in just a few days and people all over the country vowing to discontinue their support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and place their dollars to support a breast cancer cure elsewhere. The increased donations almost make up for the loss of the grant money the Komen Foundation gave to Planned Parenthood last year.
Many who oppose the Komen Foundation’s move blame it on the founder of the foundation, Komen’s sister Nancy Brinker. According to Jezebel, she is openly Republican and recently hired a Republican politician from Georgia, Karen Handel, as senior vice president of policy. Some believe Brinker and Handel were looking for ways they could cut ties to Planned Parenthood because it provides abortion service. The Atlantic reports that John Hammarley, a former senior communications advisor at Komen, said the organization had, “… caved to pressure from the anti-abortion right.” Continue reading »
Busy Parent Briefing: Susan G. Komen Foundation Halting Grants To Planned Parenthood
Buckling under pressure from anti-choice organizations, the Susan G. Komen Foundation is halting their financial support to Planned Parenthood. This change will cost Planned Parenthood hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants, mainly for breast exams, according to the AP.
Last year, Planned Parenthood received nearly $700,000 for breast exams and related breast health services. They are now scrambling to replace that money so that the women they serve won’t o without potentially life-saving medical care.
The abrupt halt in funding stems from a congressional investigation of Planned Parenthood for possible funding abuses. The investigation is widely seen as a spurious political ploy.
Are Tele-Abortions the Wave of the Future? Maybe, and Yikes.

If lawmakers and anti-abortion groups would back off of women's bodies, tele-abortions wouldn't become more common
It’s terrible that abortion doctors ever have to feel like their lives are in jeopardy because of the type of medicine that they practice.
So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that legal medical abortions can now be performed without a doctor physically present. But it’s hard not to be.
More and more doctors are opting out of performing abortions as states enact laws restricting women’s legal access to them, not to mention the threats many of them receive as a result of their type of practice.
Women in rural states are finding it increasingly difficult to find doctors to terminate their pregnancies. And now, instead of traveling long distances to have it done, they’re finding that there is another option, which is called telemedicine.
Sarah Palin vs. MTV: A War Over an Anti-Abortion Ad
A network accused by many of glamorizing teen pregnancies is apparently refusing to air a series of anti-abortion ads. Makes sense, right?
Not so much to the group that wants the ads to be seen. A group called Heroic Media launched an ad campaign called “We Can Help” at the end of April at an event supported by former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, a staunch anti-abortion advocate.
The group wanted the “pro-life” ads to air on MTV to air for several weeks, but they were pulled after just one time. Heroic Media said a sales representative at MTV said there was a conflict of interest with the network’s existing deal with Planned Parenthood.
Texas Lawmakers Give Green Light to Anti-Abortion License Plates
A bill allowing the Department of Motor Vehicles in Texas to raise money for anti-abortion causes received an early OK from the House today.
If the governor signs it into law, Texas will be the 25th state to allow “Choose Life” license plates, which will raise funds for organizations that deal with crisis pregnancies and encourage pregnant women to consider adoption instead of abortion by providing prenatal care, food, clothing and shelter.
Adoption is a fine option for unwanted pregnancies, to be sure, but unfortunately there wouldn’t be an alternative, pro-choice license plates available for people in Texas to choose from.

Government Shutdown 2011 AVERTED! But the Battle Over Planned Parenthood Continues
The White House and congress really kept their budget battle going to the wire. But just short of the stroke of midnight an agreement was reached to halt the government shutdown.
Speaking from the White House, President Barack Obama stated, “Behind me, through the window, you can see the Washington Monument, visited each by hundreds of thousands from around the world. … Tomorrow, I’m pleased to announce that the Washington Monument, as well as the entire federal government, will be open for business.”
The deal? According to reports the parties agreed to cut $38.5 billion worth of government spending, a figure that is being heralded as the “largest real-dollar spending cut in American history.”
But this is just a short-term solution to avoid a government shutdown, it will just keep the government running until Thursday. House Speaker John Boehner’s office has confirmed that $2 billion of cuts will happen immediately to keep the government going this week, and the rest will keep the government running until September 30th. At least this buys some more time. But time that will probably be spent debating the hot topic that is Planned Parenthood. Continue reading »
