Is it so bad if a little chocolate bribe gets my kid to eat something green?
Up All Night star Will Arnett admitted to Redbook magazine that he recently bribed his toddler with a large ice cream cone to get him to finish his dinner.
“That thing is half his body weight, so he was going on chocolate and sugar until 10 p.m.,” he said.
Bad parent, right? Kids should just eat well because they just should, not because they’re getting a sugar reward. Parents should set good examples and help kids understand the right way to eat because that’s their job. Bad, bad, parent, Will Arnett. And while you’re at it, move over. Bad parents need company. I need company.

Don’t blame parents if their kids are picky eaters. Even best-selling “Food Rules” author Michael Pollan had trouble getting his son, now 17, to try new foods.
“Everyone knows about picky eaters but he was in a whole class of his own,” Pollan told KitchenDaily. He’s not kidding. Apparently, for a long while, Pollan’s son would only eat pasta. To accommodate his fussiness, his parents would bring his brand of pasta with them while they were traveling. Even then, he’d refuse to eat it because the water tasted different.
“He was a white food eater of the worst kind. So I got very interested in how our tastes and food habits are formed,” said Pollan.
Rather than fight with his son over food, Pollan used sneaky techniques to get him to eat veggies, like handing them to him while he was watching his favorite TV show. ”Kids will eat anything while they’re watching TV They don’t know what they’re doing,” said Pollan. “You could put a bowl of peas or string beans or carrots in front of him and they’d be gone by the end of the episode.” Continue reading »
Yesterday, Her Bad Mother wrote a wonderful post about her daughter Emilia whom she calls “the world’s pickiest eater.”
Rather than stress about Emilia’s limited diet, the blogger opts to emphasize the foods her daughter does like. Like Her Bad Mother, I don’t want meal times to be a battle with my older daughter, Jesse, who favors mac and cheese and chicken nuggets over pretty much anything else.
Still, I can’t stand listening to other parents boast about how their kids will eat anything, suggesting that if only I had exposed Jesse to a variety of foods when she was younger she’d be omnivorous. Continue reading »
A new study has found that when it comes to getting kids to eat more fruit, the secret is in the presentation.
Dutch researchers out of Maastricht University were looking for ways to get kids to eat their colors, and what they discovered was another way to annoy parents. It’s bad enough I have to wash the fruit and wash the fruit, now I need to make it look pretty, too? From Yahoo! News:
I won’t give away the conclusion to this season’s Top Chef — I remember last year I had recorded the season finale but a friend gave it away on Facebook before I had the chance to watch it — but there was a small nugget of information in the finale that could be helpful for parents of picky eaters.

Parents of toddlers, here’s a tip: Next time you’re at your local library, pick up some board books with pictures of fruits and vegetables to read to your tot. A new study suggests that babies and toddlers who look at pictures of unfamiliar foods first were more likely to eat them at mealtime.
