In a world where young celebrities are getting plastic surgery and even teens are turning to Botox, it’s no wonder so many young girls feel anxious about their own looks. And if a girl manages to avoid the pitfalls of celebrity-induced body-insecurity, the teen magazines will get her. Packed with Photo-shopped images of impossibly thin models and articles about how to achieve that imagined perfection, even the most confident girl is bound to feel a twinge of doubt when she looks in the mirror.
But what if celebrities and magazines both got realistic about beauty? What if the message was more about loving yourself the way you are and less about trying to persuade girls that there’s a one-size-fits-all definition of beauty? If your daughter happens to open a Teen Cosmo anytime soon, she’ll be bombarded with tips on “getting a white smile for prom,” finding out “Kim Kardashian’s hair secret,” and learning to “dress for her body type,” be it Apple, Pear, or Slim/Athletic.
She’ll also see image after image like the one to the right, of women who are already unusually tall and thin and have been made to look more so. Continue reading »
Murphy’s law says that if your child is going to get bumped, bruised, scratched, or the impulse to suddenly cut their own hair, it’s going to happen in that seven day period before school picture day.
Today’s technology takes care of most of that. With a swish of a digital paintbrush, that three-inch scratch disappears from little Tommy’s school photo. (Those sharply angled, ultra-short bangs your daughter cut, though? Those are just going to have to remain a really funny family story.)
But what happens when photographers take it upon themselves to do a little more digital work on your child, like removing a scar? Or a birthmark? Does that take things too far?
Most of us known theoretically that all of the images we see in magazines are photoshopped. But actually witnessing the reality of photoshopping in action is another thing altogether. This Dove commercial uses time-lapse photography to show an average young woman getting transformed into the kind of stunning face we see on billboards, and it could really change the way both girls and boys look at magazines and advertisements.
