Jonah Mowry’s Anti-Bullying Video Goes Viral, Gets Tons of Video Responses

Jonah Mowry
I finally saw Jonah Mowry’s compelling anti-bullying video “What’s Goin’ On” last night, and I was very moved by its content. It’s more than an anti-bullying video; it’s a cry for help from a 13-year-old boy who could be anyone’s son, struggling with early adolescence and all of the drama that goes with it, set to equally dramatic music.
In it, Jonah admits that despite the smile he wears most days, he’s not happy. He shows scars left from where he’s cut himself. Jonah’s emotional message has been going viral this week thanks to a post by Perez Hilton and a tweet from Lady Gaga, but it was filmed over the summer. Accordingly, after all the attention he’s received this week, Jonah left a message for YouTubers telling them though he was filled with dread about starting eighth grade, he feels much better now, having since come out to his parents. Hooray!
But in a strange twist to the story, Jonah has been accused of lying about his sorrow or exaggerating his plight, simply because he made a video more recently that shows him laughing with a friend. Ugh. Thank God that hasn’t stopped YouTubers from responding with reassuring messages of their own, however, for which Jonah’s mother says, “I’m thankful. There are a lot of people that are giving their warm wishes and uplifting Jonah, and I think that’s good.”
In case you haven’t seen it, take a look now at Jonah’s unintentional but powerful call to arms and a few of the best responses from his legion of online supporters: Continue reading »
Celebrity Gossip Blogger Perez Hilton to Write Children’s Book
My go-to children’s books for not-fitting-in themes are ones like Robert Munsch’s “Stephanie’s Ponytail” or anything by Todd Parr . A newish one, “Lonesome Puppy” is also pretty excellent. I’m curious about “My Princess Boy,” but I haven’t come across a copy. I’m open to suggestions for others.
One that I can almost guarantee won’t make it into the Amazon cart is “The Boy With Pink Hair” by gossip blogger Perez Hilton. Not that I have anything against boys with pink hair. I just like to keep snark and images of women who aren’t wearing underwear away from the kiddie corner. (I’m close-minded?)
Maybe deep down the guy is tender-hearted and has a mission more important than mocking bad facelifts. Reported publisher Penguin seems to think so. Here’s what they say about Perez Hilton’s kids book [via the LA Times]: Continue reading »
‘All My Children’ Holds Special Memories, Why I Hope It Doesn’t Cancel
When speculation broke yesterday that All My Children, the popular soap opera created back in the 70s may be the latest victim of poor ratings and ultimately cancelled, many were disappointed. A lot of us grew up watching that soap opera. I know I did, and even though I only got to watch it on Wednesdays when I got out of school early, it was a fun part of my teen years.
The soap just recently moved its stars to L.A. after taping for over 30 years in New York, but it looks like the move isn’t helping viewership quite enough. As always Susan Lucci, AKA Erica Kane is currently involved with two men and deciding which will be her next husband. Perhaps it’s the same storylines that turned off viewers after so many years (although that is the nature of the soap opera), but like my colleague Meredith mentioned, perhaps it is the new kind of modern mother that has emerged.
I don’t have many friends that watch the soaps, but the ones who do are very loyal to their favorite shows. Also, my mother and mother-in-law are tuned in each day. If they miss an episode, they’ll catch it on Soapnet that night. It seems to be a generational switch that happened and directly affected the soap opera. As The World Turns was replaced by a talk show, The Talk, and there is speculation that All My Children may also be replaced by a talk show of some kind.
Oprah Secret? More Interesting Than Mine.
So today’s the big day. Oprah is going to tell us a secret on her show. Will you bet watching? I won’t. But it’s nothing personal, big, O. I just won’t be near a TV at the time your show airs. Plus, I’m pretty busy today and really don’t have an hour to kill just to hear your secret.
But I’m sure others do. And they’ll likely tune in with great interest so they can get the skinny directly from the Queen of Talk, herself. Internet chat rooms are already abuzz as to what it could be. Oprah’s not saying anything except to categorize it as a family secret that will be a real bombshell. As such, today’s show is one of the most anticipated in its history. Which got me thinking… maybe I should reveal an Osborne family secret here on Strollerderby.
But before I do, here’s a bit more about Oprah’s.
“Sex and the City 2″ Reviews Don’t Deter Moms
The “Sex and the City 2″ reviews are coming in and they’re not nearly as hot as the dessert where the film is set.
“The first Sex and the City got a free pass from loyal viewers of the television series. This one will try their patience,” wrote the film critic at London’s Telegraph.
The New York Daily News compares the movie to champagne that’s gone flat. ”Though the sequel is a welcome return of the four women we know and love, it’s tough not to acknowledge that if we were all friends in real life, at this point we’d probably stop taking their calls,” writes the critic, who gave the movie just two stars.
But when it comes to “Sex,” women — especially moms — don’t seem to care what the critics have to say. Continue reading »
