The school said an EpiPen was not necessary.
Laura Pendleton had done everything humanly possible to ensure that her highly allergic daughter was kept away from peanuts at school. Furthermore, if she was ever exposed, a plan had been made between the mom and the school.
Tragically, the plans were not implemented after her 7-year-old daughter, Ammaria Johnson consumed a peanut on January 3rd at Chesterfield County elementary school in Virginia.

Peanuts... as controversial as gay marriage.
A Florida elementary school was picketed by parents for making sweeping changes in support of a little girl with a severe peanut allergy. According to Fox News, students at Edgewater Elementary in Volusia County “must now wash their hands and rinse out their mouths before they can walk into their classroom, desks must be regularly wiped down with Clorox wipes, snacks are no longer allowed in class” and “even outside food is no longer permitted for holiday parties.” Given how obsessed schools across the country have become with trying to prevent allergic reactions and stopping the spread of germs, those rules don’t sound too extraordinary to me. (Except maybe the rinsing of mouths thing. That one sounds almost cultish, actually.)
The student’s father says, “We’ve fought very hard to put certain things in place to keep her alive in school. She’s already a cast-out. She can’t do things that most kids can do.” For this one student, exposure to peanuts would cause her to be terribly ill, so the question remains: should public school students be forced to undergo such rigorous procedures before entering the classroom, or is it incumbent upon the family of a student with such severe allergies to school them at home? The proposed airline peanut ban won’t be taking off any time soon.
Last month, the Federal Transportation Department announced it was soliciting comments from the public on a proposal to ban peanuts on airlines. It was an effort to protect the nation’s estimated 1.8 million nut allergy sufferers from accidental airborne contact with peanuts. For some sufferers, even contact with a minute amount of peanut dust is capable of triggering a life-threatening reaction.
But it turn out the bureaucrats who thought up the proposed peanut ban were exceeding their authority. Continue reading »
Doctors in Cambridge, UK are about to embark on a three-year study that they believe could lead to a treatment for peanut allergies in kids.
Open up the newspaper and it’s hard not to see a high school recreation of You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown these days. But if you’re not in the mood for shushing your kids in the theater, you don’t have to miss out on your Peanuts fix these days.

My kids pretty much know the songs and dialogue from the musical Snoopy by heart. (It’s not my fault; I married a musical theatre family.) In the show, Snoopy sings his big number, The Big Bow-Wow, after being chosen Head Beagle. The lyrics include the lines “Snoopy, it’s your night to howl / now I’m the Big Bow-Wow!” As if being selected to be the Head Beagle wasn’t enough, now Snoopy has another reason to celebrate — he’s been named the Top Dog in American pop culture by the American Kennel Club.
It happens every year — we go perusing for a family Christmas tree and wind up ignoring all the gnarled, crispy Charlie Brown trees.
So I’ve got to hand it to the city of Concord, Calif, this year, when it selected a mangled, brown park tree to serve as its holiday ambassador of goodwill. Rather than spending tens of thousands of dollars on a fresh-cut Christmas tree, the city strung lights around a tree in one of its parks and brought to life a beloved childhood memory.
