One of the biggest challenges for many a stay-at-home-mom?  It’s not the day to day work it takes to raise a family, it’s not the constant car pools, cooking, and cleaning, it’s making that big transition from SAHM to working woman.

Dutch women work less than Americans, and are happier

Fewer than 10 percent of Dutch women are employed full-time. The pay gap between women and men in the Netherlands is the highest in Europe, and few Dutch women hold leadership roles in business or government.

That makes the Netherlands sound like the land feminism forgot. But women there are happy. Fewer than 4 percent wish they had more work hours or professional responsibilities, even though a quarter of them make so little money they can’t be considered financially independent.

By contrast, over 75 percent of employed American women work full-time. We worry constantly about our careers. Many of us define ourselves by what we get paid to do. But it doesn’t make us happy.

Careers, it seems, just aren’t that important to Dutch women. Overall, they report higher levels of satisfaction with their lives than American women. Are we doing it wrong? What do the Dutch know that we don’t?

Reporters and financial analysts have dubbed the economic downturn “the mancession” because it put a disproportionate number of men out of work.

But a new report, “Working Mothers in the Great Recession,” shows that it could just as easily be called “the momcession” because of the way it has slammed working women — especially mothers, and particularly single moms.

While the majority of recession job losses were overwhelmingly male, as the economy crept toward recovery, men gained employment, while women lost jobs, according to the report by the Joint Economic Committee based on analysis of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The war between the stay-at-homes and the works-full-times just got thrown a loop. A new study claims neither of you is making healthy kids. It’s moms who work part-time who keep the pediatrician away.

The study out of the University of New England in Australia tracked some four thousand five hundred families and found moms who work just part-time were more likely to have kids who were a healthy weight and consumed less junk food. Continue reading »

I worked from home part-time for the first six years of my son’s life.
I was very lucky in many ways to have this option as it meant I didn’t miss a single step, a tooth, a word. I was there for everything. But all the while, I have to say I felt a level of anxiety about the fact that I wasn’t paying into a pension, my income was a mere fraction of my husband’s and I was acutely aware of my financial dependence on him.
When I started working full-time outside of the home a year ago, I felt a huge sense of relief. I’m now making enough money to support myself and my son if I ever needed to, I’m paying into a pension and I feel like I’m a whole lot safer financially.
