Being pro-choice doesn't always mean that every story of an abortion is well-received
I am staunchly and passionately pro-choice (and pro-life), but that doesn’t mean every story about a woman’s right to choose sits well with me. Take this one, for example.
Parents in New Zealand are apoplectic — and rightfully so, I think — after learning some schools are helping teenage girls get abortions and keeping them secret from their parents. Parent of some girls aged 16 and 17 have learned that school counselors arranged for them to have doctors’ appointments, scans and secret abortions.
“I was horrified. Horrified that she’d had to go through that on her own, and horrified her friends and counselors had felt that she shouldn’t talk to us,” one mother told the Sunday Star-Times newspaper.
California kids decide on therapy
Starting January 1, 2011, California minors will be able too see a therapist without their parents’ consent.
A senate bill, SB 543, which was signed last month, creates a new right for minors to consent to their own mental health treatment if they are at least 12 years of age and the therapist believes the child is mature enough to “participate intelligently in the treatment.”

Remember that Utah bill that could have made miscarriage a criminal act? The sponsor of the bill, Utah State Representative Carl D. Wimmer, has withdrawn it.
According to the New York Times report, he said he stripped it of a clause that would have allowed a woman to be prosecuted under the state’s criminal code for “reckless acts” that led to the death of her fetus. The bill set off a raging controversy among pro-choice groups because as written, it could have meant a woman would serve life in prison if she had an unintentional miscarriage that prosecutors believed she caused and she was convicted of the charges. A teenager who couldn’t get an abortion at seven months because her state bans late-term abortions has been accused of hiring someone to beat her up – in hopes it would terminate the pregnancy.
