Plus-sized clothing for children is nothing new. Even when I was a young girl back in the 1970′s, larger sizes for bigger kids could be found in their own special section of most department stores. They called them ‘husky’ and the selection was quite limited. A husky boy could choose from a few different pants and shirts and a big girl might find a dress or two in her size.
Things have changed. These days, the selection of plus-sized children’s clothing has grown to the point that in many stores, it equals the offering of standard-sized clothing. And now, these expanded sizes aren’t just available for school-aged kids. In the UK, a large retail store recently began selling an entire line of plus-sized clothing for kids as young as three. As part of her “Let’s Move” campaign to fight childhood obesity, First Lady Michelle Obama announced yesterday that food and beverage manufacturers have agreed to cut 1.5 trillion calories from food and drink products by 2015. New research suggests that even before they’re born, minority children face many obesity risks. One study concluded that cultural customs, beliefs and family income are all factors which contribute to obesity. Conventional wisdom states fat kids are uncomfortable in their skin. But new research is positing overweight kids – particularly girls – actually underestimate their weight.
To which we say, have you MET an overweight American girl?

Overweight kids eat more when they’re with familiar friends who are also overweight, says a new study out of the University of Buffalo.
Researchers recruited 65 kids between the ages of 9 and 15, then randomly paired them up. Kids spent 45 minutes together in a room with various activities, as well as bowls of food — healthy snacks and not-so-healthy too. What researchers discovered is that friend pairs ate more than children who didn’t know each other. And overweight kids ate more than thin kids no matter who their partner was. But overweight friends ate the most of all.
Are you fat? And do you worry about your kids getting fat?
Well, if you’re a mom of boys or a dad of girls, you probably don’t have much to worry about, if a new study is an indication. A British study of more than 200 families showed that obese moms are 10 times more likely to have obese daughters and obese dads are six times more likely to have obese sons. The link is behavioral rather than genetic, researchers believe, possibly because kids are mimicking their same-sex parent’s attitudes about food.
