An 11-year old Ohio boy named Tyler Wilson has proven the old anti-bullying mantra to be true: “sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never stop me from cheerleading.”
Or something like that.
Yes, Tyler Wilson is a male cheerleader, and has been since June. As a 6th grader, he’s in his first year at Glenwood Middle School in Findlay, and he’s already been bullied by boys tormenting him for cheering on the football team.
Approximately three weeks ago, two unidentified boys followed Tyler home, “approached him and punched him,” according to ABC News. The network reports, “Several small skirmishes broke out between Tyler and the two boys, according to the police report, and eventually one of the boys allegedly picked Tyler up and slammed him on the ground, breaking his arm.”
Tyler, in his 11-year-old wisdom and grace, responded simply by saying, “It feels horrible that they can’t accept me for who I am. (But) it’s my choice. If I want to be a cheerleader, I’m going to be a cheerleader.”

“Breastmilk satisfies” reads a new ad from the Ohio Department of Health, encouraging moms to consider breastfeeding their new babies — like the cute, chubby-cheeked kid in the ad. Sounds harmless, right?
That’s until you notice the (GASP) breastmilk — milk that came from a woman’s breast — dribbling down his chin. And suddenly, someone’s complaining.
I think parents need to quit hovering and let kids figure out how to fight their own battles. It helps kids figure out how to handle conflict, plus — when compared to their parents — kids fight way more fair.
It is estimated that there are about 2.4 million collisions between deer and vehicles in the U.S. every year. In almost every case, the deer are hit by the cars, not the other way around. But, as 7-year-old Brandon Hiles learned last weekend, sometimes the deer hit back. Continue reading »
A Republican lawmaker in Ohio has re-introduced a bill that would give a man the final choice on whether the woman he got pregnant could have an abortion.
Dubbed the “father’s right bill,” it would give the man the right to stand up and say he doesn’t want the fetus he contributed DNA to to be aborted. But it says nothing about then forcing him to be a good father or provide financial stability. Continue reading »
Ohio Cutting Funds to Help Foster In the latest sad story of state budgets getting desperate, Ohio is planning cuts that will directly and negatively impact the well being of foster and adoptive families across the state.
After last year’s raise from the $250 per month to $300 a month–a raise twenty years coming–the stipend for families adopting foster children will be cut to $215 per month.
