Don't keep secrets from your gyno
It’s just a bit embarrassing to share certain info with your gynecologist. It makes no sense — doctors who specialize in the reproductive system have, let’s just say, seen it all. And they’re explicitly there for your support — you’re obviously on the same team.
But it’s not uncommon to get a little red in the cheeks on the exam table. And when it comes to sharing information about health history, apparently a lot of moms just flat out lie. But according to Drs. Rankin and Raj, reporting for CNN, these omissions can come back to haunt you.
They use an example of a woman who had incontinence and was too shy to share. She peed so often she stopped drinking enough and was twice hospitalized for dehydration in the summer. And she didn’t tell her gynecologist until he himself saw that her bladder was in desperate need of help.

Just in case you don't want a man or a woman doctor.
Dr. Pauline Chen, writing in the NYT’s Well blog, says that one of her patients told her lately that he preferred women doctors. “You spend more time with patients,” he said. “It’s like you just know how to be a mother.” The motherly female doctor is a cliche of television and film, but is she real? And if women doctors are more maternal, what does that mean–do they talk more, reassure more, spend time with patients? Do any of things make patients more satisfied (or, maybe more importantly, more healthy?)
Maybe, yes, yes, sometimes, and it depends. If gender influences your choice of doctor–or, more likely, your chosen ob/gyn–it might say more about you than it does about your doc.
A California hospital has decided it’s not safe enough for midwives – so they’ve kicked the healthcare practitioners out the door, and their patients along with them.
St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital told certified nurse midwives they’ll have to see their patients at a sister facility eleven miles away from now on. According to the Ventura County Star, that sister facility has a NICU, which hospital adminstrators say the midwives need as “back up.” Continue reading »

A New York Times reader of the paper’s Consults blog asks Dr. Sheila Crowe, a professor in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology in the department of medicine at the University of Virginia, whether foods can cause infertility.
Specifically, she wanted to know whether there is a link between eating bread and other foods containing wheat and an inability to get and stay pregnant.

One of the world’s best-known experts on obstetrics has announced he thinks Dads need to get out of the delivery room and leave the women to it.
Dr. Michel Odent is a French obstetrician who’s heavily involved in the orgasmic birth and home-birthing movements. Last year, he wrote a piece in the Daily Mail espousing his theories about why dad needs to stay “nearby” for the birth, but stay out of the delivery room.
